This month our focus has been on the Hire side of the trade with a visit to the Hire Convention in Loughborough. You can read Peter’s very thorough report on pages 20 and 21, and also an interview with the new Chairman of the Board Andy Martin. The Convention was run by the Hire Association Europe, an organisation set up in 1974. It is

a leading trade body representing plant, tool and equipment hire and currently has a membership of around 900 members across the globe. HAE assists businesses, from sole traders to larger independent and privately owned

organisations, by providing operational resources to support the hire industry. Membership provides access to products and services covering all aspects of hire, including terms & conditions, safety checks, publicity, equipment, responsibilities and general day-to-day requirements. Accompanying services include legal advice, training, publicity, safety checks, leaflets, lobbying and finance advice; necessary documentation and information that will hold organisations in better stead for the long term. In addition, safeguarding can also be made easier for members, who have access to HAE’s essential range of health and safety, economical and credit control services. If you are interested in joining the organization, do visit their website www.hae.org.uk for more information. For many of the manufacturers in the trade, hire businesses are important suppliers to target and ToolBUSINESS+HIRE

Magazine is a part of the process to send out information about products available to these outlets. Peter and I also visited the first of the Toolbank Autumn Shows at the Kent Showground. Good to catch up with new

developments after the summer break. Peter had a very interesting visit to National Abrasives based in Reigate and has written a report on his day. He has also

included some information on abrasives in general in our special Abrasives feature. Reviews this month are on a Hitachi portable circular saw, some Klingspor Diamond Cutting Discs and the Makinex Easy Lift from Morris Site Machinery. I always keep a careful eye on the information coming in from the organisations such as the Federation of Master Builders

and the Federation of Small Businesses particularly since post Brexit. The FSB reports there is a fall in confidence amongst small businesses underlying issues that pre date Brexit such as the over complicated tax system and lack of commitment by the government to many infrastructure projects. The weakness of sterling has boosted exports, but the exchange rates have added to business costs, along with the introduction of the National Living Wage. However many businesses have reported an increase in revenue and plan to grow over the next 12 months with many looking for growth opportunities in the wake of the referendum result. The FMB reports there has been no slow down on projects in the pipeline since Brexit with the attitude that for the time

being it is “business as usual”. The main concerns for SME house builders are the lack of skilled tradespeople and the unnecessary red tape causing barriers to planning new projects. Unemployment figures continue to fall, which is also good news. With the manufacturers for tools within the industry continually striving to increase and improve their range of products it

is vital that the government listens to voices throughout the construction and hire sector for the continuing health of the industry. Next month is a busy one for ToolBUSINESS+HIRE with two major trade shows – THS at Donington Park and Torque

Expo at Silverstone and a ToolFair at Sandown Park. It is also Construction Week from October 18 to 20th and there will be nine trade shows at the NHBC including the Build Show and Grand Designs Live. We hope to fit in a visit to those too. I hope you enjoy reading this edition of the magazine and don’t forget to check out the website www.toolbusiness.co.uk for videos of the reviews and more information.
