New Volvos help kick-start a new dedicated plant division RM Group Services Ltd of Wolverhampton has launched RM Plant Services, a dedicated plant division of the parent group investing as it does so in a quantity of Volvo compact excavators – all supplied by Volvo Construction Equipment’s utility dealer SM Plant Ltd.

Established some 30

years ago by Managing Director Mark Tolley, RM Group Services Ltd started out as a company specialising in tools and fixings in Wolverhampton. Mark gradually expanded his business to include small tool and equipment hire under the auspices of RM Hirefix. The company has been a long standing user of Volvo

compact excavators ranging from 1.5 tonnes up to 8.0 tonnes in operating weight along with a mix of tele-handlers, rollers, dumpers and associated small plant. Both RM Hirefix and the newly created RM Plant Services will operate in

tandem, with RM Hirefix servicing the Wolverhampton market with tool hire and machines up to 3.0 tonnes in operating weight. RM Hirefix will now be able to tap into the resources of its sister, RM Plant Services, for larger machines as the situation demands. Mark has had no problem doubling the size of his compact excavator fleet with

new Volvos as he launches RM Plant Services. The recent additions supplied by SM Plant include ECR50D’s, EC27C’s, EC15C’s and the largest machine in the fleet to date –the 8.8 tonne ECR88D reduced swing radius compact excavator. RM Plant Services specialises in hiring to small and medium sized contractors in

the West Midlands. All hire is non-operated and is available on a spot, medium or long term basis. SM Plant Ltd is Volvo Construction Equipment’s utility dealer covering the

Midlands and central southern England and is headquartered in Rugby, Warwickshire. For further information visit www.volvoce.co.uk

GT Trax choose the Multi-One

for their Power Tracks Roadways GT Trax, the Cambridgeshire based specialist hirer of temporary roadways and walkways, have taken delivery of a Multi-One 10.8 articulated loader. The machine has been supplied by the access machinery distributor, Cumberland Platforms. For some time, GT Trax has been actively seeking a machine that was able to

handle and install their range of temporary roadway panels and in particular their new Power Track 40 system. GT Trax first spied the Multi-One at the Executive Hire Show and Cumberland Platforms arranged an onsite demonstration. The performance of Multi-One proved that the machine had all the capabilities to safely lift and install both of their Power Tracks 20 and Power Tracks 40 roadway systems. “Our range of

temporary roadways has developed vastly over the past 10 years,” explained GT Trax managing director, Trevor Tinker. “We needed a

machine of this type to enhance our performance and efficiency on site. The Multi- One has excelled in all departments and has a number of easily set up attachments, so most of our challenges on site can be overcome.” GT Trax has two temporary roadways systems - Power Track 20 and Power

Tracks 40. Power Tracks 40 are manufactured from hardwearing, recycled HMPE plastic and measure 2440 x 3000 x 44mm, with each plate weighing 275kg. They incorporate an anti-slip profile which can be alternated for vehicle or foot traffic. Lighter duty, Power Tracks 20 can be positioned by hand as each panel weighs just 57kg and measures 3m x 1m x 20mm, making them ideally suited for light traffic For further information please contact Graham Crisp 01487 823344 info@gttrax.co.uk www.gttrax.co.uk

telephone 01444 440188 Guest Column What painting and decorating

products do you need? The rainy and cold months are on the way and very soon there won’t be too much you can do in your garden. So that’s the perfect time to turn your hand to giving your indoors a bit of a facelift. Anyone can decorate, right? Well, to a degree that’s

true but like most things in life if you use the correct tools you will always do a much better job. Okay, let’s start with the basics – you will need a mix

of brushes and rollers, depending on what part of your house you are painting, and you should never pick up inferior products with the aim of saving money. You want a good job doing? Then splash out that little bit extra and get brushes that won’t be forever losing bristles or rollers that won’t clog up within minutes. Of course, there are different brushes and rollers for whatever surface (and surface area) you are looking to paint so take the time to read the small print when picking up your products because spending that extra few minutes in the store will save you hours of frustration later. My column this month isn’t about how to paint but we’ll assume you know

the difference between interior paint and exterior paint or masonry paint, emulsion paint, and gloss paint and satins. We’ll also assume you know about primers and undercoats and about wood care. What I want to focus on is painting and decorating equipment hire and what

you should be looking to acquire if you want to make life easy on yourself. Paint and wallpaper strippers Every good decorator needs a stripper. Whether you are tackling a heavily

wallpapered wall or just one that has been painted 100 times, you are going to want to strip back several layers to make sure you get the best possible surface to decorate. Powerful wallpaper strippers are a delight to use (even if the steam does mist

up your goggles!), but don’t forget the wallpaper perforator which can prepare even the toughest papers for removal, including vinyls, woodchip and painted over papers. If you are looking to strip paint then an electric hot air stripper is ideal, even for varnished surfaces, and you can remove any unwanted old wall finishes with an incredibly handy drywall sanding kit. When it comes to putting new paint on, a heavy duty high-torque power

mixer/stirrer will save you a lot of arm-ache and will make sure your paint is as smooth as possible before application. And if you are planning on covering a large surface area, a brush or roller may not be able to do the job quickly enough so powerful spraying machines are a wonderful tool to have. They even come with different sizes of tip, depending on whether you want to spray a big area in one go or want to do more fine, controlled painting. I have the pleasure of being ambassador for Wagner paint spraying machines and can often be seen demonstrating their products on Ideal World TV. Tiles and floors Of course, you might have to cope with firmly fixed tiles, especially if the wall

you are about to tackle hasn’t had its appearance altered for a very long time, so the best tool to get these suckers off the wall is a powerful scraper with purpose-designed chisels. Alternatively, if you are looking to put new tiles on you can choose from a range of dust-free manual or electric tile cutters, including diamond tile cutters which are easy to use and produce excellent results. If you want to tackle a wooden floor and return it to its former glory – as

long as it has real wood floorboards – then you will need a floor sander and a hand-held sander for the tight spots and finer features that you’ll need to tackle. Safety first Finally, never over-reach or stretch too far when you are decorating,

especially if you are doing stair areas or landings. Depending on the size of job you are taking on, you will certainly benefit from an access tower, anti-slip work platform or podium steps. Most of these units fold up so they are easy to carry and erect. Above all, though, they reduce any risk of injury. On that subject, always remember: whatever equipment you are hiring,

make sure you have the correct protective equipment and clothing. Decorating might seem like a harmless hobby but it can be a dangerous job if you are not wearing the right gear – hard hat, gloves, goggles, overalls, steel-toed boots and so on. If in doubt, talk to the people at your favourite hire store and they will advise

you on the best decorating equipment to suit your needs. Happy decorating! Craig Phillips is an official brand ambassador for Checkatrade. For more information please visit www.checkatrade.com
