Dutch couple hooked on cross-country skiing

“We learned to ski in 2010, when we came here for the fi rst time,” explain the Dutch couple Bob Aal and Valérie-Anne Houppermans. T ey were so hooked on cross-

country skiing that since then they have returned to Ylläs two or three times a year, and their skiing has certainly improved. “Neither of us had done any cross-

country skiing before. Sometimes we went downhill skiing in the Alps. Bob planned our fi rst holiday here in advance, focusing entirely on snow and ice: ice fi shing, ice swimming and so on,” Valérie-Anne recalls. ”At home in Holland it never really

snows at all, but many people go skating, even in indoor rinks.”

Buying a cabin About a year ago, Bob and Valérie- Anne decided to buy their own little cabin in Äkäslompolo. “It’s quite small, only about 35

square metres fl oor space, but then we’re not such a big family,” Bob refl ects. Äkäslompolo is the ideal holiday

location for skiing enthusiasts. “Because of my job, we lived in

Africa for a while, but a cold climate suits me better,” says Valérie-Anne. “It’s great for kids to be surrounded

by all this nature,” Bob adds. Both of them work at the Ministry

Going on the ‘Myllyhiihto’ skiing trip

Pernille enjoys a snack with her parents at the Äkäsmylly café aſt er their trip. She had her own sledge, but got

bored with it aſt er the break. Wan- dering around and exploring the surroundings seemed much more interesting. “We came from that car park with

Pernille, while Valérie-Anne skied up here. Now we’ll take turns, and I’ll ski back to Äkäslompolo,” Bob explains. T e cabin will be empty aſt er their

holiday has ended, and will be rented out by an agent. “We’ve told people all about our

cabin and Ylläs on social media. It has attracted a lot of attention, and one of my friends has already been here,” Valérie-Anne adds.
