Finches brighten up the spring
Last spring, local people were intrigued by the lar- ge fl ocks of pine grosbeaks (Pinicola enucleator) swarming around Äkäsmylly. Members of the fi nch family, the pine grosbeaks spent weeks feeding at bird tables right next to the Äkäsmylly café. Ornithologist Jorma Halonen explains that in
Lapland, they are a migratory species. It usually stays further south during midwinter, but some were spotted from the end of February 2016 onwards. T e birds might spend the winter in Lapland if
there is suffi cient food available, such as in a good year for rowan berries. “In autumn, large fl ocks of pine grosbeaks can
be seen perched on rowan trees. You know when a fl ock of them has fed there, because the snow underneath is an orange-red colour. T ey only eat the rowan berry seeds and spit out the rest, while waxwings and thrushes eat the whole berry,” Halonen continues.

Various colours T e pine grosbeak population varies greatly in size from year to year, as the fl ocks of birds go where food can be found. In Finland, the pine grosbeaks nest only in an area stretching from Kainuu to Lapland. “T e fl ock lives a nomadic life in spring until their
nesting season in May. Before nesting, the birds are very easy to see at their feeding places,” Halonen says. T e pine grosbeak is slightly smaller than the
Siberian Jay. T e female is a mustard yellow colour, while the male is red. “Young males might be a lighter shade of red, and
right in the beginning their colouring is very similar to that of the females,” Halonen adds.
Quiet and peaceful birds Pine grosbeaks are attracted to the old forest at Äkäsmylly, along with their other feathered friends. Café owner Hannu Kekäläinen lists the birds he
saw there last March, such as Siberian tits, great tits, willow tit, bullfi nches and Siperian Jays. Dippers swooped around the rapids, and a wood grouse could be seen guarding its territory near the car park. Kekäläinen also remembered the mass migration
of pine grosbeaks near Aakennus fi ve years ago. “We ran the “Vasalammen kämppäkartano” café
then. I reckon there were about two hundred birds, and some of them fl ew straight into the windows. We warmed then gently by hand, and most of the dazed birds recovered to fl y again,” he explained. T e pine grosbeak is a very tame and peaceful bird.
Being so quiet, the birds are hard to spot in summer. It’ll be interesting to see if the pine grosbeaks re-
turn to their old habitat again this winter. So keep an eye open when you’re out and about in the great outdoors.
