BURSARIES This year, SAW offered Creative Pathway Bursaries to five emerging artists to develop their practice and create new work for the Festival.

CREATIVE PATHWAY

SHANNON WATSON

Having grown up in Somerset, Shannon hopes to use the bursary to broaden her creative connections to the county, and to learn more about its heritage. By using her interests to contemplate new possibilities, Shannon will explore the interactive side of her practice to create a participatory event that encourages the public to engage in the rich site of Dove Studios.

Shannon graduated with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from Plymouth College of Art in 2018. She has been awarded graduate residencies at Spike Island, Bristol and the Engine Room, Bridgwater. With a focus on participation, she has used these opportunities to develop a performative practice which draws on digital media and installation.

AMANDA LYNCH

The bursary supported Amanda to explore her practice by researching the concept and role of money within western culture for an artist. Amanda uses affordable materials and found objects in her work, applying her personal experience as an artist and young person today.

Amanda believes that money can be completely controlling of what we do: ‘How do we make art and what do we then sell art for?’ ‘Is the process of making art influenced by how much money the artist has to put into making a new work?’ ‘Does money affect the studio practice of an artist?’ She is supported and mentored by curator, art consultant Freeny Yianni at Close Ltd.

Amanda received a BA (Hons) in fine arts from De Montfort University, Leicester and a Masters degree in Arts, specialising in sculpture. She has recently moved from London to Somerset.

EMMA HOUSLEY

Emma’s work is influenced by the idea of visual poetry, along with a very immediate, emotional response to the natural world.

‘I am delighted that this bursary will give me the chance to focus fully on my work. I’m so happy to be twinned with the inspirational venue of Clayhill Arts and hope to be both supported and challenged to do things that will diversify my practice in ways I can’t yet imagine. I am producing some large scale canvases for Somerset Art Weeks that will reflect my experience and reaction to being immersed in the Quantock Hills.’

Emma has a degree in English Literature and went on to study at Cyprus College of Art.
