COUNTY OF CONTRASTS

COUNTY OF CONTRASTS is Somerset Art Works’ special programme for 2019 which includes new commissions and site-specific work responding to hidden and unknown aspects of Somerset. For the Festival, we have worked with guest curators, artists and partners to develop and produce new work, in a wide range of contemporary art practices, including film, new media, sound, performance and installation.

BEN RIVERS: AFTER US A SUNLESS PARADISE

Somerset Art Weeks’ launch is an underground event exploring subterranean civilisations. The filmmaker Ben Rivers began his research for this ongoing commission in Somerset in 2017. The netherworld of vast chambers at Wookey Hole will be illuminated by projection and filled with the echoes of song, foretelling our future by drawing on geological deep time.

Rivers produces rich, cinematic portraits that explore wilderness. It is not hard to imagine why the vast, dark passages, hidden water courses and rock formations hold such a fascination for the artist. The new script has been written collaboratively with the American science fiction writer Mark Von Schlegell; the final work will complete a trilogy of films that feature hermetic worlds and people living on the edges of modernity.

BEN RIVERS

Ben Rivers trilogy of films will be brought together in a solo exhibition at Hestercombe Gallery.

9 November - 9 February 2020: Hestercombe Gallery, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Taunton, TA2 8LG. 01823 413923 / hestercombe.com/gallery

“the work of Ben Rivers, who was born and raised in Somerset, has garnered increasing recognition in the past years... the way he captures his subjects, cut loose from conventional time, could not be more appropriate.” (The Guardian, 2011)

Rivers was awarded the prestigious Dutch Eye Art and Film Prize in 2016 and in 2015 completed an extraordinary ArtAngel Commission.
