INDUSTRY AWARDS COMMENT

THERE’S nothing like shouting about success! Congratulations to Crosby

Management Training apprentice Tara Davies for winning the Best Retail Apprentice award sponsored by the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders (NFMFT) and to Plumpton College apprentice Sam Deighton, winning Best New ‘Trailblazer’ and Champion Meat Apprentice of the Year, at the Institute of Meat and Worshipful Company of Butcher Awards in London last month. Also, celebrating success

is the NFMFT and Primary Authority partner Horsham District Council, which because of action taken by Principal Environmental Health Officer Paul Hobbs, stopped what could have been for one member a lengthy and costly prosecution. Investing in training is

something that everyone can shout about. Putting resource into something as abstract as Primary Authority for trade associations like the NFMFT can be risky. But in a climate of change, Primary Authority has proved well worth the risk and for many has been the difference between profit or loss and success or failure! Something, we should all be shouting about! n

notable winner was Tara Davies from Humphreys Butchers in Bishops Stortford (photograph of Tara receiving her award on the front cover). Tara won

the award for Best Retail Butchery Student sponsored by the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders. She was previously employed by Gog Magog Hills Farm Shop near Cambridge. Her former mentor at “Te Gog” was Head Butcher Miles Nicholas and President of the Cambridge and District Master Butchers Association. Miles said, “Tara is a very

nice young lady. She started life at the farm shop in the café and was an excellent Barista. She always showed an interest in butchery so as soon as I had a vacancy I wasted no time in poaching her for my department. She sailed through the training with Meat Ipswich and was a great asset to the department. From day one she was helping to unload and carry pig carcases from the van. She was always determined to show she was as good as the boys in everything.” n
