Welsh college staff join campaign to professionalise hair industry A growing national
campaign to professionalise the hair industry
by persuading
all qualified hairdressers and barbers to become state registered has been boosted by one of Wales’ top colleges. Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) has thrown its full weight behind the campaign by registering all its hairdressing lecturers and assessors with the Hair Council. The

campaign for compulsory state
registration
Council’s of
qualified hairdressers is being spearheaded by political director and board member for Wales, Shirley Davis-Fox, MBE, chairman of Bridgend- based ISA
Training,
the largest independent hair and beauty training provider in Wales.
Mrs Davis-Fox has lobbied senior politicians and the campaign, which aims to regulate the industry, has won cross party support from MPs in Westminster and Assembly Members at the National Assembly for
Wales.
Anyone can currently set up in business in the UK and work with potentially dangerous chemicals as a hairdresser or barber without having the necessary qualifications. Ceri Evans, CAVC’s head of commercial and retail enterprise and a member of Mrs Davis- Fox’s think tank on State Registration, said: “The college is supporting State Registration to raise the profile of the industry and professionalise staff. We also hope it will encourage
our learners to register as well.
“I think the campaign is essential for the industry and we are very glad to be a part of it with Shirley. All qualified hairdressers owe it to our industry to support State Registration and I would encourage clients to ask if staff in the salon that they use are state registered. I think unqualified hairdressers should not be allowed to
open a hair business.” Mrs Davis-Fox said she was delighted that CAVC had joined the growing campaign and called on all colleges and professional salons across Wales and the UK to follow suit. She urged members of the public to only use qualified hairdressers who are state registered. Lobbying by the Hair Council has led to an All Party Parliamentary Group
on Hair being formed in the House of Commons to discuss issues close to the hearts of hairdressers and barbers, including state registration, minimum wage, apprenticeships and VAT.
Thanks to lobbying of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs by the Hair Council, hairdressers and barbers can now claim tax relief on their State Registration fees.

“If we leave them a large amount of money will they be more vulnerable, how will it affect their benefits” “As the main carer of someone with a learning disability, how do I ensure that they continue to have the quality of life they now enjoy when I am no longer able to care for them”?
