Drivers Face £100 price rise from discount rate ruling
Drivers face price rises of up to £100 each as a result of the Ministry of Justice ruling on personal injury
damages payouts, insurance market
research experts Consumer Intelligence warns. The decision to cut the so-called discount rate to a negative -0.75% from 2.5% will increase costs for insurers by up to £3 billion with drivers paying the price, Consumer Intelligence believes. That could add up to £100 to average car insurance premiums – which are already rising – and trigger a “massive jump” in drivers shopping around. The discount rate is used to adjust amounts awarded in major personal injury claims where victims suffering catastrophic injuries are awarded lump sums based on the return that can be earned when the money is invested and has been set at 2.5% since 2001. The decision to cut it to -0.75% increases the amount that insurers have to pay out. Consumer Intelligence is urging drivers to shop around for the most competitive price and points out new rules on showing last year’s premium on renewal quotes coming into effect in April make comparisons easier.
Ian Hughes, Chief Executive of Consumer Intelligence
said: “This is going to cause a massive jump in shopping around as this is the first year that insurers are going to have to be upfront about premium changes. “Drivers will see their prices rising and will not be bothered about whether it is the Ministry of Justice or discount rates that are behind the premium increases.”
Big Woodworking Weekend at Axeminster Store
The biggest free woodworking event in South Wales will provide a ‘cave of wonders’ for all woodworkers – whether trade, DIYers, hobbyists or craft specialists. Top professionals and staff experts will demonstrate the latest power tools, machines and hand tools from a range of over 10,000 products on offer
at Axminster Tools and
Machinery’s Cardiff store in the Valegate Retail Park. Store Manager Lee Parfitt says that this free event on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th March will be ‘like nothing seen before’ in South Wales. “Almost all visitors to the store have a ‘Wow!’ experience and tell us they are overwhelmed by the sheer choice of tools and machinery we have all under one roof. “Our Big Woodworking Weekend will highlight our fantastic array of products and our promise ‘never to be beaten on price for professional power tools”. Topping the bill is professional woodturner Nick Agar, who has become one of the most sought-after demonstrators on the international woodturning stage. Nick specialises in surface enhancement and his award-winning work incorporates carving,
airbrushing, ceramic and metal effects. His work has been
British Carvers

Woodcarvers (Welsh team) return to the store to showcase their exceptional guidance
talents and to offer advice
those
interested in starting this absorbing creative hobby. Visitors will be able to get hands on with leading power tool brands including Bosch, DeWalt, Festool, Fein and Mirka as professional demonstrators put these machines through
their paces. Advice and
guidance on finishing products, abrasives,
sharpening techniques,
dust extraction systems - and almost any other topic of woodworking interest – will be available from trade specialists supported by the Cardiff sales team.
“This is a rare opportunity to see the very best of the tools, machines, accessories and consumables available to today’s woodworker,” says Lee. “We’ll have some great deals over the weekend so we’d urge visitors to get in early. There’s plenty of parking, free tea and coffee and we’ll have a number of goody bags to give away as well.”
