SGA EVENT 2017

GARETH WARD PRINT BUSINESS

Gareth Ward opened proceedings highlighting the impact that the General Data Regulation would have on publishers. He brought to the attention of our audience the need for them to be compliant with this new regulation, what will they will not be able to do and the changes they will need to make. Our publishers

questioned Gareth about what they would need to do with their own magazines and subscriber lists. We take 5

minutes of Gareth’s time just after he exited stage left to discuss a few things that he raised with our SGA Live audience.

WELL GARETH YOU CERTAINLY RUFFLED A FEW FEATHERS THERE. DO YOU THINK ALL PUBLISHERS REALISE THE IMPACT THIS REGULATION WILL HAVE ON THEIR BUSINESS? To judge by the questions that I answered before we ran out of time and those that I couldn’t answer because there wasn’t time, I don’t think so.

SO HOW LONG DO THEY HAVE TO CHANGE THEIR WAYS? The regulation comes into force on 28 May next year, but it’s probably a good idea to get started sooner rather than waiting until 27 May.

YOU MENTIONED THE NEED FOR ALL BUSINESSES IN TIME WILL NEED THEIR OWN DATA PROTECTION OFFICER, DID S&G’S MIKE DONOVAN ASK YOU TO SAY THIS? Did he have a word in my shell like in a darkened room, you mean? He said the bruises would not show. No. The regulation is specific, every business will need to appoint a Data Protection Officer to ensure that the regulation

is adhered to and as a point of contact for customers.

SO ALL PUBLISHERS WILL NEED TO REVISIT THEIR DATA INCLUDING SUBSCRIBERS TO ASK THEM TO OPT IN TO YOUR MAILING LIST? If someone has a paid subscription, permission to send them a magazine is an implied part of the contract. This applies to an association where a magazine is a member benefit. If it’s a magazine on CC terms, legacy data can be used, but the rules are so far not clear about defining what is permissible and which data needs updating. Err on the side of caution.

EVEN US WITH OUR SGA MAGAZINE? Oh yes. If sending it out to existing customers, there will no problem, but if sending out to named individuals in businesses that are new to S&G, you may have to explain yourself in more detail: where did you obtain that data, who gave you permission etc.?
