for a large event, it can be split into three self-contained, sound- proofed areas sitting 150 in each. Outside, the level two foyer space – 200sqm – is ideal for exhibitions and catering.

THE LEVEL ONE 150-seat audito- rium is perfect for a small confer- ence or event and its adjacent foyer is ideal for registration, catering and networking. Level three is home to the seminar or breakout rooms, accommodating up to 35 people each and fitted with projection screens, LCD TVs and lecterns. Four of the rooms have removable walls to create two large rooms, capable of hosting up to 85 delegates. Flat floors and flexible furniture mean that you can change the layout of each room to suit your event. Level nine hosts the building’s

executive suite. With its spa- cious setting, large windows and bright rooms, the suite is ideal for high-level board meetings, smaller corporate receptions and dinners.

“THEY WERE KIND ENOUGH TO SAY THAT OF THE 82 CONFERENCES THEY HAVE HAD SINCE 1950, WE WERE IN THE TOP TWO ALONG WITH SAN FRANCISCO”

Gordon Hodge, head of conferencing and events

It can comfortably sit 64 delegates in a cabaret style and for presenta- tions the windows have adjustable screens to reduce natural light. Te suite is completely self-contained, has its own foyer space, reception desk and cloakroom. Each conference and meeting

space has some of the latest audio- visual technology available. For example, among the features of the main auditorium are presenter’s console with integrated PC and comfort monitor, flexible central lectern with mic, DVD player and document camera, dual data projection onto ceiling-mounted retractable screens and induc- tion loop. Nourish, the univer- sity’s catering provider, embraces sustainable, organic and fairtrade principles. “In Glasgow, there are a lot of

venues that can accommodate around 150 people and then there are the much larger venues like the SECC and the Royal Concert Hall,” said Hodge. “But there are very few

medium-sized spaces than can ac- commodate between 200 and 500 people, particularly with dedicated, modern conference and events facilities.”

IT’S BEEN A busy time for Hodge and his team; within a week of taking ownership of the build- ing last February, Strathclyde was hosting commercial conferences and at its peak has hosted 55 events in one month. A highlight? “Just a few months after we opened, we hosted an international conference on wireless, mobile and vehicular technology. “Tree days, 500 people; there

was actually a real sense of commu- nity developed between us and the delegates,” said Hodge. “And they were kind enough to say that of the 82 conferences they have had since 1950, we were in the top two, along with San Francisco.”
