SPORT AN ICON IS REBORN

From a glorious past emerges a modern masterpiece

Surrounded by beautiful countryside, Trump Turnberry offers luxury and exhilaration

O

n the west coast of Scotland, an icon is being reborn; the Turnberry Hotel and its links courses are

undergoing renovation, the result of which is due to be unveiled on June 1st. It was in 2014 that the Trump

Organisation bought the resort and began a large-scale project, with the first phase encompassing the golf clubhouse and the meeting space within the hotel. Phase two is underway, with the whole hotel building and every bedroom and public space being upgraded to a new level of luxury. Trump Turnberry is perhaps best

known for its championship golf course; the Ailsa course is one of the world’s most-loved golf courses, hosting the Open Championship four times, including the unforget- table 1977 ‘Duel in the Sun’. Te Trump Organisation and golf course architects Mackenzie & Ebert stud- ied the course’s history closely and worked to create a modern mas- terpiece, including five new holes and a myriad of improvements to existing features. Te hotel will also offer a selec-

tion of newly refurbished meeting spaces, perfect for events from large-scale conferences and product launches, to smaller boardroom style meetings.

THE RESTYLED Ailsa Craig Suite, Caledonia Ballroom, Old Tom Mor- ris Suite, Crystal Ballroom and Don- ald J. Trump Ballroom complement existing spaces in the clubhouse, reopened last year after significant refurbishment, which features

the Champions Suite and the Tom Watson Boardroom. Surrounded by 800 acres of countryside, Trump Turnberry’s location benefits those guests looking for something a little more active from a team building perspective. Onsite is a dedicated outdoor activity centre called Turn- berry Adventures, which offers a selection of exhilarating outdoor pursuits. Trump Turnberry offers a true five red star service for all clients and customers. Included in a booking is a

dedicated events coordinator who will look after the organisation all the way through to the running of the event on the day. Te resort’s golf team is also able to assist with creating the perfect corporate golf day with an in-house golf resource available to look after all aspects of tournament administration.

of the Homeless World Cup 2016. “It is challenging, frustrating and rewarding – all at the same time,” he said of his role. “But seeing the journey of the players, what they have achieved to get here – for most it is the first time out of their country, let alone representing their country – that’s what makes you keep coming back.”

n THE EVENT Te tournament will take place on Glasgow’s George Square, which for the duration of the seven-day event will, say the organisers, be “the most inspiring place on the planet”. In total 64 teams, representing

51 countries, will come together to celebrate and highlight the year- round and life-changing work of the Homeless World Cup national partner network. More than 500 players will arrive in Glasgow, each with their own story to tell, each at their own point on a journey to cre- ate a better life for themselves.

Like my sister, they are married off at the age of 15! I feared that I would meet the same fate. I fought that through football because, when we do something new, it brings a change in our
