n SURGEONS’ HALL, EDINBURGH


The conference, events and hotel team behind one of Scotland’s most august institutions has landed a sought-after business award. Staff at Surgeons’ Hall were crowned Edinburgh’s Best Performing Business at the city’s prestigious annual Chamber of Commerce awards. In 2015 the team achieved a series of major milestones, including the launch of the Prince Philip Building, the opening of Café 1505, which enjoyed a successful run as a Fringe venue and the delivery of its biggest ever conference, for 550 delegates.


n VERDANT WORK’S HIGH MILL, DUNDEE A recently renovated mill in Dundee hosted the Dundee & Angus Tourism Conference. The Verdant Work’s High Mill was the setting for a gathering aimed at highlighting the ways in which businesses in the area can make the most of what the region has to offer. The mill is an almost 200-year-old A-listed building and was restored thanks to a £2.9m project by Dundee Heritage Trust.


n ABERDEEN EXHIBITION & CONFERENCE CENTRE


Global construction consultancy Turner & Townsend is to play a key role in programme managing a development which includes the building of the £333m Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. The 105,000sqm complex, due to be completed in time for the Offshore Europe Conference in 2019, will include a 9,000sqm 12,500-capacity arena, which has the flexibility to double up as an exhibition hall.


n GLASGOW ROYAL CONCERT HALL The construction of the new purpose-built rehearsal and recording facility for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) and a new 600 seat music venue for Glasgow was completed in October. Designed by Glasgow City Council’s in-house team of architects and led by Kerr Robertson, who was responsible for city projects such as the refurbishment of much lauded Glasgow’s City Halls, and world-renowned acoustic specialists ARUP, the new home for Scotland’s national symphony orchestra now provides a “world

The Glasgow Barras is in line for a £30m transformation after Glasgow Council said it wanted to create an arts and events quarter in the city. Along with the Barrowlands, a renowned music venue in its own right, two new venues nearby have been earmarked for expansion; Barras Art and Design and St Luke’s. Other proposals include a new Barras Museum and Heritage Centre, art-related public projects such as street art or installations and the creation of Barrowland Square, where the work of renowned artist Jim Lambie may be moved.

n ASSEMBLY ROOMS, EDINBURGH Edinburgh will host a new digital festival this year, after London-based Riverside Studios was named as the


successful bidder to operate the Assembly Rooms. Riverside’s artistic director, Bill Burdett-Coutts, who ran the iconic venue for 30 years until 2012, said: “The world of arts and entertainment is increasingly working with digital technology. It will fit as a positive new event in the midst of all the other festivals in August and, in due course, our ambition will be to work with a whole range of partners in the city.”
