Taking conferences and events to the next level
A new venue offers modern, dedicated facilities in an innovative setting

Like a storied arrow tip, the Univer- sity of Strathclyde’s Technology & Innovation Centre rises nine floors from Glasgow’s George Street. Te
visually striking £89m building is transforming the way academics collaborate with business, industry and the public sector. It is where people are finding so-
lutions to challenges in areas of eco- nomic importance including energy, health, future cities and manufac- turing. In the spirit of the centre’s intent – to encourage exploration, interaction and advancement - a good chunk of that money, £11m, went towards creating state-of-the

-art conference and events facilities. Recently, Gordon Hodge, the
genial head of conferencing and events at Strathclyde, gave me a tour. It was a rare quiet moment in the centre, allowing a detailed look at the range of spaces; on a return visit, the building was buzzing with two conferences. “People do not expect academic
institutions to have modern, dedi- cated conference facilities,” he said. “Tis is a different offer. We’re open
seven days a week, 365 days a year. We’re in the city centre, with good access to public transport and the road network. It’s very flexible, in terms of the spaces. And we have a really great team.” Among its facilities are a 450-seat
auditorium, 10 seminar or break- out rooms of varying size, a tiered lecture theatre seating 150, flexible foyer space for catering, exhibitions and networking and, on level nine, a self-contained suite that lends it- self to smaller corporate receptions, dinners or board meetings.
AT 130SQM, THE main audito- rium is the ideal venue for a large conference. It can also be set up as one tiered section for up to 300 delegates, and one flat-floored area for up to 150 people. For smaller events, or to create separate spaces
