STRICTLY A SURPRISE AT TRUMP’S NEW BALLROOM

Ayrshire Hospice raised £70,000 at its Summer Ball, the first event to be held in the new Donald J. Trump Ballroom at Turnberry. More than 400 guests enjoyed a surprise ap- pearance from stars of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, includ- ing Anton Du Beke, Aljaz Skor- janec and Janette Manrara. “Raising over £70,000 is an

outstanding achievement,” said Trump Turnberry’s general manager, Ralph Porciani. “It is going to a hugely worthwhile local cause that provides essen- tial support to people in Ayr- shire whose lives are affected by life-limiting illness.” Mandy Yule, chief executive

of the Ayrshire Hospice, added: “To be the first event to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of the new ballroom at Turnberry was a real privilege and cer- tainly provided our guests with an impressive ‘wow’ factor. “A huge thanks to our hard

working team of volunteers and our Summer Ball commit- tee who all ensured the event ran smoothly and was such a resounding success. A wonder- ful setting, hugely generous guests and top notch entertain- ment - all in all made for a fantastic evening.”

Trying to find the right snapper for the right occasion leaves many an events professional gnashing their teeth. Conferences and exhibitions are typically challenging environments for even the best photographers to get the best out of a subject. This image, taken by former Herald Staff Photographer

WORLD CANALS CONFERENCE RETURNS TO SCOTLAND

After more than a decade the World Canals Conference returned to Scotland at the end of September. The four-day event took place in Inverness and welcomed 300 delegates from more than 12 countries who descended on the city for the biggest in the international waterways calendar. This year’s event also featured the

inaugural World Canals Awards, with one category winner (The Pioneer Award) going to The Kelpies (pictures above), the world’s largest equine sculptures, which tower over a new section of the historic Forth &

Clyde Canal and form the centrepieces of the £43m Helix project in Falkirk. More than two million visitors from all over the world have stood in the shadow of the sculptures since their unveiling in April 2014, bringing renewed vibrancy and income to the area and boosting the local economy by an estimated £1.5m per year. Dozens of speakers, academics and

experts at the pinnacle of their fields featured on the conference programme, including Roland Lewis, President and CEO of the New York Waterfront Alliance.
