2017: Back to the future

for both the tourism industry - and the events and festivals sector, which does so much to draw visitors to Scotland. Te conference will focus on the future of tourism, post the EU referendum. It will hear from operators, industry leaders and travel experts. Among them will be Caroline Bremner, head of travel and tourism research at Euromonitor International. Bremner, a graduate of Edinburgh University

T

whose first job was as a guide at the Castle, now leads a team of travel experts and works with more than 100 in-country analysts and research managers across the world. She has played an integral role in creating the most extensive travel and tourism intelligence system used by leading direct marketing organisations, governments and travel corporations. Bremner will outline her thoughts on the short and long-term implications of Brexit. Tey will set the scene for a morning of varied

insight and, no doubt, lively debate. A concrete measure of how well Scotland is placed to maintain its pitch as ‘Te Perfect Stage’ will come in the afternoon,

he Scottish Tourism Alliance Autumn Conference and annual meeting takes place on Wednesday 5 October at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall. It comes at a pivotal moment

when VisitScotland launches the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology. Te ‘Years of’ have proved to be a popular and affective way of showcasing what this country has to offer and the theme for 2017 could not have been better chosen for these uncertain times; an affirmation of what Scotland’s global reputation is founded upon. VisitScotland intends to celebrate the country’s

unique history with a programme aimed at supporting and driving the nation’s tourism and events sector. History and heritage is already a key motivator for visits to Scotland and an important part of the visitor experience: “Te 2017 Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology will shine a spotlight on some of Scotland’s greatest assets and icons, as well as our hidden gems,” it says. Tere already exists a strong portfolio of existing events celebrating history, heritage and archaeology and they will form a key part of the 2017 calendar. Te agency is also funding a programme of ‘signature events’ that will celebrate Scotland’s achievements and encourage significant participation. If there was a time to go back to the future, it is now.
