‘HELP MA BOAB!’
West Ward Works, the former home of DC Tomson’s world- famous annuals, hosted the first Dundee Design Festival in May. DC Tomson chief operating of- ficer David Tomson said: “We’re delighted to be able to work with the City of Design team. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the heri- tage of the building whilst also looking forward to the exciting redevelopment of the city. Our company is fully supportive of Dundee’s cultural development, including the V&A Dundee proj- ect, and we’re keen to contribute to the development of further arts facilities for the city. We’ve been exploring ideas for the revitalisa- tion of West Ward as a cultural space and this seemed like an ideal opportunity to try it out!”

THREE-POINT TERROR PLAN FOR MEETINGS
In the wake of recent terrorist attacks the Joint Meetings Industry Council released a three- point plan urging planners not to discriminate against locations for meetings. The JMIC urged its members
not to rush to judgement when assessing the viability of destinations to host meetings and events. Entitled ‘perspective’, ‘vigilance’
and ‘resolve’, the plan is designed to reassure and not “overreact” to the
perceived risks of hosting an event. “While certain destinations have
received a lot of attention in this regard, the reality is that anywhere in the world may be targeted” the JMIC said. “We should not unfairly
discriminate against any individual destination unless there are immediate and specific reasons for concern, recognising that this has important implications for an industry that often makes long- term decisions.”
EMA SIZE UP SCOTLAND FOR EVENTS PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION
The Event Marketing Association (EMA) hosted a networking event at Surgeons’ Hall Edinburgh in May, with a view to potentially establishing a Scottish function. Aimed at corporate in-house
planners, the association is exploring demand north of the border with invited events professionals from a range of organisations across Scotland’s events sector.
“We aim to be the UK’s leading
association for corporate in-house events planners and marketers,” said Richard Waddington, EMA Chair, as he briefed attendees. The reception attracted around
30 events professionals who listened to a presentation from Waddington, and then broke off into two groups to discuss common areas of interest which inspire people to join.
