Just one more

thing F

or events and festivals planners, organisers and suppliers the day job is more than enough to keep busy (often into the night as well). Juggling multiple tasks,

supporting company growth and thinking about personal professional development is enough. It’s important to switch off. Which makes it difficult for industry leaders to ask for yet more commitment. In July, it is hoped that the terms of reference for

the fledgling Events and Festivals Industry Group (EFIG) will be agreed. It has four aims. To represent the views of the events and festivals sector in relation to the delivery of Tourism Scotland 2020 and Scotland the Perfect Stage. To influence the direction of Government, its agencies and industry around the issues and opportunities which significantly impact on the sector’s performance and Scotland’s competitive advantage. To encourage the sector to share and collaborate to build stronger capabilities and capacities across the industry, in line with the strategies. And, working with Tourism Scotland and Perfect Stage strategy groups, to support and contribute to the monitoring of the sector’s strategic activities against an agreed vision and targets.

Industry-led strategy groups have proved

successful in other areas of Scotland’s economy. But the events and festivals sector is only recently being recognised as a significant contributor to Scotland’s prosperity. And, so far, it has struggled to bring the disparate parts together, articulate a vision and sustain a voice. Te new group has attracted support from leaders across the events and festivals industry. But, its success will depend on the commitment of the wider events and festivals community, from the occasional volunteer through to chief executives. Everyone involved has a role to play, a contribution to make. It might seem a big ask to add another task to

the list, but ultimately involvement with the group, or even just feedback and ideas, will help galvanise the industry, give weight to its voice in important areas of policy and investment, and will make the day job that much more manageable, fulfilling and successful. So much so, it might even afford you a day off now and then. If you can, engage with the Events and Festivals Industry Group (see P36).
