consists of a number of interpersonal activities, such as interviews, mock lessons and group tasks. Those judged the best all-round fit for Wellington are offered a conditional place, subject to success in Common Entrance, Academic Scholarship, or the college’s own entrance examinations, which are taken in Year 8.


Overseas students in the UK For the many overseas students who will be facing an entrance


test or a new academic programme of study, making the necessary academic preparations is key to success. Some overseas students prepare for UK entrance exams well


in advance, and engage the help of a tutor in their home country. A Levels, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, International


A Levels and Pre-U courses are challenging programmes, even for students who are fluent in English and have taken GCSEs, International GCSEs, the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, or similar courses. It is vital that students who need to develop their English-language skills or academic areas begin the process as soon as they know they are coming to the UK, to give themselves the best chance of gaining entry to their preferred schools and being successful in their chosen courses. Attending a summer school can be a good way of doing this. Chris Lewis is director of studies at Bishopstrow College, an


independent International Study Centre offering English-language and academic pathway programmes to prepare international students aged from seven to 17 for entry to top boarding schools.


He points out that, in many instances where an overseas student


fails to gain admission to the school of their choice, this isn’t because they lack the requisite knowledge or talent, but because British schools are looking for skills that these students do not always demonstrate, on paper or in interviews. By delivering courses that enable them to adapt, International Study Centres can help solve a very real problem. Bishopstrow students, says Mr Lewis, are equipped to learn


in an English-language environment, having been taught study skills as well as the language used to deliver subject content. This is combined with coaching in traditional English sports, a programme of art-based activities and cultural excursions, and the experience of living as a boarding-school student. The result is an independent learner with a balanced range


of interests, experience of the boarding routine and rules, and a set of key skills that boarding schools are looking for in their future students.
