FROM THE EDITOR CHRIS MAXWELL TAKING ACTION I
n September 2019, a ranking of the world’s top 100 female executive role models was published by INvolve – a diversity and inclusion network –
17 Lady Nicola
Mendelsohn at her photo shoot with Director’s cover photographer for this issue, Tom Jackson
and Yahoo Finance. Number one on that list was Lady Nicola Mendelsohn. Facebook’s vice-president for EMEA has led a series of diversity initiatives to effect tangible cultural change at the tech giant, including a 10 per cent rise in the number of women in senior roles, since her appointment in 2013. In an exclusive interview from p17, Mendelsohn sets out a 12-step plan by which any leader can start building a more diverse business and enjoying the proven fi nancial advantages that this brings. “It’s sometimes easy to sit in meetings and have conversations without taking action, but I believe that interesting things will happen when you act, which is especially important in the realm of inclusivity,” she says. “Addressing diversity makes sound business sense.” For further guidance in this area, check out the IoD’s hub of useful resources at
iod.com/inclusivebusiness. Instigating change, often despite contrary forces in the wider world, is a theme in this issue. On p15, for instance, the IoD’s new director general – China expert and polar explorer Jonathan Geldart – urges members to be bold amid the sociopolitical turbulence and to keep informing the IoD of your needs so that it can take these directly to the policy-makers. On p8, meanwhile, directors from a range of sectors discuss measures they have taken to combat climate change. And, from p45, we interview all the winners of the 2019 IoD Director of the Year Awards, gleaning advice including the following call to action from Jonathan Spiers, chief exec of Autistica: “Make decisions – and then deal with what happens next.” Lastly, on the subject of change, this edition is my last in the editor’s chair at Director. It has been a privilege to work for the IoD and its wonderful 73-year-old magazine; to meet so many inspiring business leaders; and to share all your stories and advice with our highly engaged community of readers. I hope you’ll enjoy this issue and continue sharing your views in 2020 with my successor, Marc Smith, via
