According to industry groups such as the onfederation of British Industry, there is a rowing concern among employers that in the future they will struggle to fill skilled job roles. But does an increasing focus from the Government on the acquisition of academic knowledge help this situation, or should schools be asked to play a role in equipping pupils with soft skills for the workplace?
The APPG for Education is asking what value we should place on the need to promote other skills that prepare our children for the future, besides strictly academic ones.

MPs out in force to back national school apprenticeship campaign
MPs have shown their support for a campaign encouraging schools to take on apprentices in positions ranging from Teaching Assistants, Business Administration, PE and School Sports support. The One By 2020 campaign, led by National Schools Training (NST), hosted a parliamentary event this week to raise
awareness of the goal to place one apprentice in every school in the UK by 2020. This is the latest step in a successful campaign by NST, the leading provider of training and apprenticeships to schools across the UK, which has seen a 60%increase in the uptake of apprentices taken on by schools. • The event was hosted by Neil CarmichaelMP, Chair of the Education Select Committee and attended byMPs, Peers and Civil Servants from the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills
• Attendees were able to hear first-hand from apprentices, tutors and school leaders about their experiences of being and taking on apprentices
• The uptake of school apprentices through NST has increased from 1,326 in January 2015 to 2,147 in January 2016
• NST have now delivered apprenticeships in over 2,000 schools – a campaign milestone. The One by 2020 campaign dovetails with the Government’s plans to create three million new apprenticeships by the end of the decade. From April 2017, thousands of sch ools,

workplace? The APPG will examine these issues and submit a report to both the Department for Education and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.”
The deadline for submissions to the Inquiry is 13 June 2016.
