School leaders commit to a full review of assessment to create a stable, coherent vision

e re

Government-led reform of assessment has alienated a substantial proportion of the profession and a growing number of parents. It lacks a clear vision for a stable, proportionate and coherent approach to acknowledging children's achievements and measuring school performance.

NAHT has established an independent Assessment Review Group to consider the assessment arrangements that should be in place from the start of school through to the beginning of Key Stage 3.

Comprising of serving school professionals and experts in the field, the group will be chaired by Dave Ellison, a deputy head teacher. Representatives from the DfE, Ofqual, OFSTED and STA will be invited to attend. Russell Hobby, general secretary of school leaders' union NAHT says: “NAHT has set up this independent assessment group to find a way to make the system work better for children, for parents, for teachers, for school leaders and even for government. We know we need to be accountable and we know that assessment - and even testing - is an important part of the ut this must be proportionate and focused on improving ls.

"This is a chance to start a more constructive dialogue, with the profession in the lead.Without such dialogue, the prospects for next year look bleak. “We are delighted that a range of practitioners and education experts have agreed to sit on the panel. We hope to produce a report with purposeful recommendations to the primary assessment system up to key stage 3.”

The group will consider the current assessment procedures, the statutory testing regime, the role of teacher assessment, transitio n between phases , accountability requirements, associated outputs and the coherence of the va approaches. It will a

scholarship forOAT A 16-year-old state school student is

celebrating after being selected as the first recipient of a new scholarship to study in the sixth form of one of the country’s leading private schools. It is the first time that the national award, which is co-funded equally by Ormiston Trust and Gresham’s, a private school in Holt in Norfolk, has been given. Samantha Horan, a Year 11 student from Ormiston Chadwick Academy, in Widnes, was selected for the scholarship from a strong field of candidates from

across Ormiston Academies Trust’s (OAT) network of schools. The two other finalists were from Ormiston Victory Academy, near Norwich, and Cliff Park Ormiston Academy, in Gorleston. All of the candidates impressed the awarding panel with their skills, confidence and determination.

The judges said Samantha was selected because of her “independence, resilience, positive attitude and her incredible ambition”. She hopes to study four A-levels – maths, further maths, physics and chemistry – and then win a place at a Russell Group university or the California Institute of Technology, before going on to do aMasters. Samantha has a burning desire to then go on to teach in areas of social disadvantage to make the biggest difference to the lives of future young people. That's something that is at the very heart of Ormiston Trust and that sense of moral purpose is something she feels ha s been really shaped by being part of Ormiston Chadwick.

A local collaboration between Gresham’s School and Ormiston Venture Academy has been long standing, with a student from Venture being offered a scholarship place each year for the last seven years. One of the existing Ormiston Venture Academy scholars will shortly become an Oxford graduate. This latest initiative is the first time a scholarship opportunity has been opened up to the entire network of Ormiston a cademies .
