Highlights from the UK education sector 7 VIEWS

With VSO volunteer Paul Jennings, and Patrick Hayes, Director at BESA

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. I’m sure it won’t have escaped your notice that there’s a rather significant event coming up later this month – I’m talking of course about the EU referendum. There’s been a lot of noise and heat from both parties, as you’d expect, and those in higher education have raised serious concerns about the impact of a Brexit on the UK’s universities, but I’ve not read much about the consequences of such an event on primary and secondary schools. There has been some talk of lower immigration numbers eventually having an effect on class sizes, but that surely has to be balanced with the fact that there’s no guarantee immigration would actually decrease post-Brexit.

Enough of politics, on to the issue. In our first feature, we hear from the Association of Translation Companies on the important role languages play in embracing cultural diversity in our schools. In our second feature, the International Baccalaureate Organisation outlines the benefits of assessing real-world skills, adaptability and life-long learning. Last but not least, our View from the classroom feature features two schools who have recently returned from the battlefields of Flanders – of particular relevance this year with the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme being commemorated on 1st July.

We have all the news, comment and insight you'd expect, and remember, you can get in touch with us via Twitter, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone or email. We love hearing from you!

Enjoy the issue! Jonathan Swift - Managing Editor
