rica Brandt from the Centre for Parent Engagement (CPE), recently presented insights on the ‘Nudge’ theory within education.
CPE, a partner organisation of Schoolcomms, was set up to identify the most effective ways for schools to drive parent engagement through the use of technology by putting parent engagement theories to the test and reviewing and conducting research.
What is ‘nudging’? “A nudge is anything that alters people’s behaviour in a predictable way without forbidding any options or significantly changing their economic incentives” - Richard Thaler and Cass Sun So why nudge parents? Parents love getting messages
. CPE research shows stein.
that 83%of parents said the number of texts they receive from school was ‘just right’. Busy, on-the-go parents can sometimes be hard to get hold of. A text is a quick and easy way to get key information to parents about homework or attendance in a subtle way, so they can respond at a convenient time. Also, 77%of adults use a smartphone. Communicating with parents on a platform they’re already comfortable using on a daily basis means they will engage more, and are more likely to respond.
For this reason, ‘nudging’ can really work in education - reducing absences, increasing homework completion rates and increasing overall performance and grades are all benefits of ‘nudging’ shown in research reviewed by CPE.
Keep it simple for parents
The School Gateway platform is simply accessed by a 4-digit pin code; which parents can set themselves. They receive notifications just like any other app and can respond directly from the app too. A key benefit of communicating with parents this way is that it’s free. Schoolcomms offer free app messaging – to help save money on the cost of texts.
Erica Brandt, ResearchManager at CPE says: “Using nudge theory, we can move school communication into action. It helps parents and carers know how to help students do their best. For instance, rather than asking their child how school was, parents will already know what the child did that day, and can ask about a specific part of a
lesson.More than improving grades, nudging can also improve relationships at home.”
The Centre for Parent Engagement offers more insights on research into parent engagement, blogs and helpful tips on texting home. Find out more on their website:
