FETA chairman tackles key industry issues at annual lunch in London
AT THE 26TH annual FETA lunch, held on 14 April in London, chairman Graham Wright updated over 600 peo- ple on the association’s activities. He expressed concern about the
Government’s move to reduce renewa- bles incentives. He said: “When the new Government was elected last year and decided to stop any further changes to building regulations (Part L), we were somewhat dismayed, but not totally surprised.” He continued: “What has concerned
us more, though, is the Government’s move to reduce incentives in cer- tain areas dealing with renewables. Technologies such as heat pumps will continue to need government support through incentive schemes to enable the market to reach a state of matu- rity to become self-sustaining. We are currently at a high risk of stalling any growth that has been achieved in this
sector and the alarm bells are ringing in many areas.” One of FETA's focal points is train- ing: “Initiatives such as the Trail Blazer apprenticeship schemes and in-work training initiatives such as the BCIA controls training programme, are good examples of how FETA members have seen a need and acted to solve a prob- lem,” said the chairman. FETA has been actively promoting the industry to young people, through the Big Bang Science Fair, for instance. Mr Wright then outlined another issue that the association has become involved in: “the need to address the use of retentions, which is part of the “toxic payment practices which blight the construction industry. Both ADCAS and BCIA are closely engaged on this and FETA has played a full part in the ongoing Government consulta- tion. Ministers have acknowledged the
problem; recognising that frankly there is nothing new to be said – we urge them not to fudge this issue with some sort of voluntary code but to devise a clear legislative solution.” Mr Wright said: “FETA members are already working with Government to influence this process, but further work is needed to make the installation of heat pumps a lot less arduous for the specialists who carry out the work, and for home owners keen to make use of renewable energy sources.” He went on to discuss the impend- ing EU referendum: "Whatever the future may hold, European regulations will remain a dominant factor which will have both technical and commer- cial consequences for manufacturers and you may rest assured that FETA will continue to interact with European organisations at all levels to further the interests of all of its members.”
Adexsi launches fire protection division
ADEXSI UK HAS launched a specialist service and maintenance division aimed at providing support for critical fire and smoke protection equipment. Adexsi Protect has been set up in response to growing demand from building owners and managers keen to ensure their smoke ventilation equip- ment continues to work as designed and particularly when called upon in the event of a fire to save lives and minimise damage to property.

She said: “Maintaining the equipment we (and others) supply is a rapidly growing area because of increased awareness among clients of their responsibilities and the risks associ-
ated with fire safety. The financial and human cost of fires, along with methods for mitigating the impact, is far better understood these days. At the same time, regulators, insurers and fire authorities are ramping up the pressure on building owners to take all necessary steps to pro- tect their built assets and the occupants.” The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRO), which came into force 10 years ago, states that a ‘responsible per- son’ must ensure all components of the fire safety system are kept in ‘efficient working order’ and ‘good repair’. They must carry out a fire safety risk assess- ment and then put a planned mainte- nance regime in place. Failure to meet the requirements
of the RRO can lead to fines of up to £10,000 and two years in prison for the designated responsible person.
Prohibition notices can close a business down if the local fire officer is not satis- fied that the right measures, including regular testing and maintenance of all system parts, are in place. “Organisations can also be prosecut- ed under Corporate Manslaughter law if they are deemed to have failed to ade- quately protect employees and visitors to their building,” explained Ms Skarra. “Installing fire protection systems is a good first step, but many organisations don’t follow that up by putting proper service and maintenance plans in place. Many systems are forgotten because they are ‘out of sight out of mind’. “Keeping equipment operating to
its optimum is sensible in all aspects of building services, but is particularly important when it comes to life safety systems, for obvious reasons,” she said.
