Biomass system saves energy A Scottish hotel located on the banks of Loch Ness is being heated by one of Windhager’s highly efficient, low- energy biomass boiler systems, with the added benefit of exceptional monetary savings.
The Glenmoriston Arms Hotel has installed a Windhager 120kW BioWIN Excel Kaskade system housed inside
an external BioCABIN, Windhager’s solution to a modular boiler house for commercial installations
By completely replacing its previous LPG and electric storage heating system the hotel has benefited from over £13,000 per year in energy savings, with additional payments of £13,560 from the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme, which is now offering 4.18p per kWh generated. Rugby Club turns to Sentinel Portsmouth Rugby Club is now taking advantage of Sentinel Commercial’s KalGUARD, a highly successful electrolytic scale inhibitor kit that is scientifically proven to prevent limescale formation in hot water systems. The club turned to KalGUARD after discovering an extremely loud banging noise coming from one of its hot water boilers, which was then just five-years-old. The noise, known as ‘kettling’, is caused by an accumulation of limescale deposits on a boiler’s heat exchanger. House manager Jim Dixon said: “The boiler manufacturer sent an engineer along to open up the boiler. He confirmed that heavy limescale deposits had formed on the heat exchanger surfaces. As a result, they had to make the necessary repairs, which cost around £1,000, a substantial sum to a club such as ours. To avoid the same thing happening again, the boiler manufacturer recommended installing KalGUARD from Sentinel Commercial. Since the installation of KalGUARD in 2005 I’m very happy to report that we haven’t encountered any further noise episodes from either boiler. Furthermore, the boiler manufacturer performs an annual service and they report that the boilers look clean and scale-free inside.” Sentinel

Elta launches new Multiflow fans Elta Group Building Services has added a new range of highly efficient Multiflow SEM and SEL products to its portfolio of mixed flow in-line fans available from Elta Fans.
The Multiflow SEM is a new player in the market, whilst the SEL will enhance the current range of models available. In order to meet the stringent levels of efficiency and compliance demanded by update ErP Legislation for products and components of fan and ventilation systems, both models are presented with AC and EC specifications.
These two new products, suitable for general HVAC ducted ventilation systems in light commercial and industrial areas, provide distinct benefits to HVAC distributors and contractors including improved price points, exceptional service, high stock availability and quick delivery.
Nygel Humphrey, product marketing manager at Elta Group, said: “The new Multiflow SEM and SEL fans will complement and grow our existing mixed flow, in-line product portfolio at a time when industry professionals and planners, are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of better indoor air quality in non-domestic environments.” Elta Fans

Vent-Axia adds powerful new model Vent-Axia has added a powerful new model to its popular Lo-Carbon Sentinel Kinetic range of mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) units. Ideal for larger homes and multiple occupancy units, the addition of the Sentinel Kinetic High Flow means Vent-Axia now offers a complete range of MVHR solutions, from small apartments up to light commercial. Made in the UK, the Sentinel Kinetic High Flow benefits from the latest high efficiency, backward curved impeller design and boasts a specific fan power as low as 0.65W/l/s. These features ensure the lowest possible energy consumption and an exceptional performance range covering small one-bed apartments to the largest of houses. Recognised in SAP PCDB, High Flow combines supply and extract ventilation in one unit. Warm, moist air is extracted from ‘wet’ rooms through ducting and passed through the heat exchanger before being exhausted outside, and fresh incoming air is preheated via the integral heat exchanger. Boasting up to 175l/s at 150Pa, the powerful High Flow is capable of extracting from up to 14 bathrooms and a communal kitchen, while still achieving almost 90% heat recovery. The range’s fully automatic capability means effective ventilation is always achieved. Vent-Axia

Efficient ventilation and heating unit ilberts (Blackpool) Ltd has developed a natural ventilation unit that also features both heat reclamation and space heating. The Mistrale MFS Fusion unit can now be optioned with an integrated LPHW coil, which provides a complete solution for both morning warm-up and any boost heating requirements. The standalone unit is installed as normal through the building façade. The core MFS appliance provides natural ventilation and blends the incoming fresh air with the warmth from the exhaust air without the need for a heat exchanger. With the LPHW coil option, for morning warm-up, the coil is energized and the fan runs on full speed for approximately 20 minutes (depending on night set-back temperatures and flow temperatures) to provide an even heat distribution across the room before occupancy. The integral fan ensures maximum air blending and avoids any stratification. Gilberts has fully tested the solution within its dedicated test facility to ensure full, even mixing within the room. In tests, using the boost feature, the system achieved correct mixing and temperature when an air change rate of 13 air changes/hr (55l/s standard 32 person classroom) was required. The energy cost of running the fan for morning warm-up has been calculated at just £2.19/annum/classroom. Gilberts

Giacomini helps tomato growers Condair Underfloor heating specialist, Giacomini, has been selected to assist Hertfordshire tomato growers, Guy and Wright, in the production of its Eco Tom tomatoes. They are grown with the help of an anaerobic digestion process that uses waste vegetable matter which, when it decomposes, produces
methane gas. The methane is then used to fire micro turbines that generate electricity to heat the tomato growing glasshouses. The waste CO2 generated is fed back into the glasshouses, which gets absorbed by the plants and helps the fruit ripen quicker, producing more tomatoes. Giacomini’s underfloor heating is used to maintain the correct temperature in the farm’s flexible stoage tanks, which hold the digestate left over from the anaerobic digestion process and the methane given off by the organic material in the digester tanks. The nutrient-rich digestate is stored and used as an effective biofertiliser, while the methane is converted into electricity for the farm. The system provides a recirculation of nutrients intro agriculture and contributes to wider environmental protection and preservation, as it is a carbon-neutral process, unlike using fossil fuels, and further supports Giacomini’s stance on efficiency. AmbiRad warms train centre At the Polmadie Traincare Centre in Glasgow, energy solutions and transport company Alstom required a new heating system to replace a costly and ineffective oil-fired system. Europe’s leading manufacturer of gas-fired radiant heaters, AmbiRad, supplied a 61 burner Nor-Ray-Vac system and SmartCom controls to save
energy, money and provide a perfect environment for crucial train maintenance. With large, constantly open doors, train maintenance sheds are notoriously difficult to heat and even more difficult to keep warm. The installation of the comprehensive Nor- Ray-Vac system will also avoid the significant wasted energy associated with heating vast internal spaces suffering from fluctuating temperatures – perfect for contemporary rail sheds.
