Low energy data centre cooling Hoval’s ServeLine system provides secure cooling for data centres with extremely high energy efficiency, avoiding the need for mechanical cooling for around 97% of overall operating time in accordance with


ASHRAE TC9.9 (Data Center Networking Equipment – Issues and Best Practices). It uses three forms of cooling. The first stage is indirect free cooling with fresh air, supplemented with low energy adiabatic cooling as needed. Mechanical cooling is only introduced to meet unusually high cooling loads. Control is via the ServeNet system, which records all relevant parameters, compares current efficiencies of the three cooling mechanisms and optimises their interaction. ServeNet can be fully integrated into the Datacentre Infrastructure Management (DCIM) and supplies all information for Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) evaluation. Indirect cooling via high efficiency plate heat exchangers eliminates the risk of dust or humidity to IT equipment. In an emergency, the system ensures the data centre can be cooled exclusively by chilled water. Airbloc launches air curtains range Airbloc, part of Nortek Global HVAC (UK) Ltd, a leading European developer and manufacturer of energy efficient HVAC systems, has developed a range of commercial/ retail air curtains, designed to create a comfortable indoor climate in any season.


The Airbloc DX Series, gives all the


benefits of a traditional air curtain with the added benefit of a renewable heat source.

Packaged heating and cooling unit Reznor, which is part of Nortek Global HVAC (UK) Ltd, a leading European developer and manufacturer of energy efficient HVAC systems, has launched the P125, a packaged cooling and heating unit.


The new range of units has been developed using the proven engineering expertise gained by Reznor with more than 125 years experience of manufacturing HVAC equipment.

Smith’s adds ceiling fan convector Smith’s Fan Convectors has launched the Caspian Skyline, a new ceiling fan convector, to join its commercial range. Caspian Skyline CT60 fits into a suspended ceiling within a standard 600mm x 600mm ceiling tile with only the grille showing, providing easy access for both installation and maintenance. It has been developed using EC motor technology, so is efficient, quiet to run and easy to maintain.


The fan convector can be used alone or in series with other Caspian products or to complement the aesthetics of the building. Like all Caspians, the Skyline is hydronic and plumbs into any wet central heating system in place in the building.

Smart billing for community heating Heat metering and billing specialist Switch2 has launched a new, three-in-one, smart, pay-as-you-go billing and energy management system for community heating schemes. Heating system solution System inefficiency caused by dirt and air build up has been remedied at one of the UK’s largest entertainment venues, thanks to the installation of Spirotech UK’s vacuum degassing and dirt separation products. The 7,500 capacity Motorpoint Arena Cardiff welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and hosts international acts. Maintenance of the site is managed by Marcus Donoghue, plant, logistics and safety manager, and following many years of poor flow rates in the upper levels of the building and wider issues of dirt contamination throughout the whole system, a solution was needed. Built in 1992, the Motorpoint Arena Cardiff’s heating system was originally installed with no dirt or air removal facility, so the system needed to be cleansed of over 20 years of contaminant build up. Mr. Donoghue agreed a deal with Spirotech UK to supply two products, a 4.5 bar Vacuum Degasser and one 200mm High Flow Dirt Separator, to remedy the severe air related problems that were causing blockages and poor functionality. Since installation, maintenance has been significantly reduced and all issues with dirt and air have been eradicated, negating the need for time consuming manual venting and bringing the reheat system back to full functionality. Toshiba offers new warranty scheme Toshiba Air Conditioning, which introduced the industry’s first seven year warranty, has launched a new warranty scheme based on installer skills and competence. Under the new scheme, to achieve the highest level of cover – a seven year enhanced warranty – installers must be F-Gas registered, have successfully completed three relevant Toshiba training courses and file commissioning and maintenance reports for a project online. The next level down, standard seven year cover, requires installers to be F-Gas registered and have completed three relevant Toshiba training courses. F-Gas registered contractors who have not undertaken three Toshiba training courses will receive standard five year warranty cover.


The three warranty bands relate to three tiers of Toshiba installer: T7 Enhanced Warranty Partners, T7 Approved Warranty Partners, and T5 Registered Installers. Each is able to offer customers the relevant level of warranty cover for equipment installed by them. Alpha warms nurses’ residence A nurses’ residence in Greater Manchester needed to be able to supply larger than average volumes of hot water to a number of outlets at the same time, but didn’t want to compromise on energy efficiency. Maxfield Property Developments stepped in to provide the solution: two of Alpha’s wall-hung FlowSmart system solutions.


FlowSmart works by sending cold mains water to the GasSaver, which is pre-heated using reclaimed flue gases, before diverting it to the copper coil heat exchanger in the thermal store - to be further heated by the surrounding hot water from the primary system. A blending valve then brings the water down to an optimum temperature of 30ºC before it enters the boiler. This mechanism allows the boiler to satisfy heavy water demand for a sustained period of time, without any detrimental impact on the flow rate.
