Air handling units

Wakefield manufacturing plant. An HD Beam is a non-penetra- tive support frame for chillers, AHUs, packaged plant, generators, pipes and steels. It is a robust but flexible solution where space may be limited, or there is a require- ment to position directly over existing structural roof steels. Weight is then evenly distributed across the specified quantity of HD Beams. It is also height adjustable

to maintain a level system on roof falls up to five degrees.

The Big Foot Safe Access range is designed to allow a secure route for service engineers and other trades to gain access to plant and for managing the flow of other personnel. Offering secure and easy access to roof-top services, Big Foot will survey and design custom Safe Access sys- tems tailored specifically to meet

individual design parameters. Offering specifiers a comprehen- sive range of freestanding systems, Big Foot’s products are designed and manufactured by the company for a wide variety of applications, including HVAC, solar units and safe access equipment. The prod- uct portfolio provides complete, simple, safe and secure non-pene- trative, prefabricated roof support systems negating a need for time

consuming and costly penetrations through the roof.

Big Foot Systems’ products and systems are described as quick and easy to install ensuring project cost and time clarity, thus reduc- ing the need for complex, time- consuming and expensive detail- ing. Big Foot Systems offers short manufacture and delivery lead times to help a project meet its schedule and stay within budget.

Tailor-made for compliance

Changes in EU regulations on non-residential ventilation units, in January, have created some confusion in the industry according to Andrew Glen, sales and marketing director of Bradford based Mansfield Pollard, but he believes tailor-made solutions may overcome the challenges

JANUARY 1, 2016 brought with it some significant regulatory change and associated challenges for those involved in the specification and supply of non-residential ven- tilation units.

In July 2014 the European Union ratified a new Commission Regulation (EU) No 1253/2014 which is designed to deliver ener- gy savings and greenhouse gas reductions across the whole of the European Union including the UK. The EU Directive which applies to non-residential ventilation units for use in non-hazardous environ- ments stipulates new requirements for minimum energy performance. Ultimately the changes mean that the efficiency of air handling units being installed after the 1st January 2016 will improve, and the improvement makes a contri- bution to the EU’s target of an overall reduction in energy con- sumption of 20% by 2020. However, the changes in the regulations make for a number of challenges for the industry accord- ing to Andrew Glen.

“Major construction projects can be literally years in the planning and it’s not inconceivable that projects for which equipment is being delivered now may have been designed before the legisla- tion was announced.

“That creates obvious practical

difficulties as to reach the new efficiency levels the heat recovery systems within an air handling unit may end up being quite dif- ferent in size from those originally envisaged prior to the legislation. “Larger components may have a

knock on effect on both the size and the cost of the air handling units which in turn may have implications for the size/design of plant rooms etc.

And Andrew says the responsi- bility for the provision of compli- ant equipment lies firmly with the manufacturer and there has been no grace period. “We strongly believe that as an industry we have a responsibility to design and supply air manage- ment solutions which are energy efficient and which minimise the creation of greenhouse gases. We therefore welcome this new legis- lation and are working with our clients to help them understand the implications of this change in the regulatory requirements. Mansfield Pollard believes that

tailor-made solutions will help to make the difference for clients. “As suppliers of tailor-made air handling units we have designed many thousands of Air Handling Units to exacting specifications and this change in the regulations is simply another criteria to which we have to adhere.”

“The fact that our units are tai-

lor-made provides us with expert- ise which we’ve been able to use to help our clients with some of the practical challenges which the legislation has resulted in. Mansfield Pollard produces air handling units, kitchen canopies, air conditioning systems and vibra- tion and acoustic management sys- tems. It won the Outstanding Employer of the Year award at the Yorkshire Post Excellence in Business Awards 2015.
