New CIBSE president says engineering is art

N

ew CIBSE president Peter Y Wong recently used his inaug- ural address to change percep- tions about building services engineers and argue that they should see them- selves as artists and practitioners. Speaking at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, he drew analo- gies between the principles of art that went into creating some of the world’s great masterpieces and the principles that go into creating high performing buildings such as Hong Kong’s Inter- national Commerce Centre and Singa- pore’s Gardens by the Bay. He urged engineers to see their work as an expression of the princi- ples of integrity, professionalism and the public interest and to be proud of creating buildings that perform well as a mark of their craftsmanship rather than for compliance or to meet min- imum standards.

In addition, Mr Wong referred to his status as the first president from the Hong Kong region. He called for CIBSE to reach out to engineers outside the UK and the established regions in order to deepen its pool of experts and provide more knowledge on topics rel- evant to an international audience. “My presidential pledge is to inspire the industry to embody the spirit and values of being a CIBSE member and to promote the positive message of the values we believe in, the professional- ism we treasure and the aspiration of exchanging best practice among like- minded professionals worldwide. “Building services engineers are one of the most important professions for the future health of the planet and the world is depending on what we do to ensure that we have healthy and productive places to live and work for generations,” said Mr Wong.

FETA sets up working group for A2L refrigerants

ETA (the Federation of En- vironmental Trade Associa- tions) has set up a new A2L refrigerants working group and has released a guidance note entitled ‘An introduction to A2L refrigerants and their use in Refrigeration, Air Condi- tioning and Heat Pump applications’. Unveiled in 2015, the F-Gas reg- ulation requires the introduction of refrigerants with significantly lower Global Warming Potential (GWP) and will ban new equipment which uses hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refriger- ants with a GWP of over 2,500 by the year 2020. New refrigerants are being developed and in many cases these are pure, or blended, HFOs (Hydro Fluoro Olefins).

F

To attain the lowest possible GWP, some of the new refrigerants exhibit lower flammability. To recognise this, and their difference from higher flammability refrigerants such as hydrocarbons (classified as A3), a new A2L classification has been in-

troduced by ASHRAE.

Produced by members of FETA as- sociations, the guidance note offers an overview of the new refrigerants, plus practical advice on their safe use. It signposts the fact that these refrigerants will play an increasing role in the market in the years ahead; particularly with air conditioning, where future alternatives will be A2L type refrigerants.

The new working group will offer clear guidance on A2L refrigerants and implications of their use, shar- ing information and communicating changes and updates as they occur. It will also work with standards bodies to ensure any new standards developed reflect the need for wider usage of such products, in order to meet the requirements of the F Gas regulation. Many FETA members are already involved in this process. The document can be downloaded at http://www.feta.co.uk/publications/ feta-publications

Nu-Heat plans future growth

N

u-Heat, the UK supplier of underfloor heating and re- newable systems, has secured

investment from new shareholders as part of plans for continued growth. The firm has a 25-year history of de- livering fully designed, energy efficient underfloor heating and renewable sys- tems. It has outperformed the growing market in recent years to become a £15m business and is the only heating company to have been awarded the UK Customer Service Standard, Service- Mark, with Distinction. A management buy-out, led by Nu-Heat’s MD David Roberts, with the backing of Bestport Capital, puts the firm in a strong position to continue with its impressive growth trajectory. Having dedicated much of their working lives to the company directors, Alison Troop, Adrian Troop and Andrew Grimsley have decided to retire.

Aspen Pumps buys Salina SAS

A

spen Pumps Group, the manu- facturer and distributor of condensate removal pumps,

has completed the acquisition of Salina SAS, a leading French distributor of air conditioning and refrigeration ancillar- ies, for an undisclosed sum. This acquisition extends Aspen’s global footprint, adding an administra- tive office in Paris and an operational hub in Normandy.

As Aspen’s distributor in France, Salina has been pivotal in building Aspen’s position in the market, and the acquisition is a natural development in a close trading relationship that has lasted over 20 years. Salina’s product offering comprises

many high quality brands, including Aspen’s full range of condensate re- moval pumps, Aspen Xtra and Big Foot Systems.
