Heating systems

The case for fan convectors J

ohn Tarling, commercial manager of Dunham-Bush (pictured) explains why fan convectors are often the best solution when selecting heat emitters. Fads and trends come and go but

overall practicality and sound logic usually prevail. Hence for over 60 years Dunham-Bush fan convectors have been among the best heat emitter solution, where fast controllable heat is demanded at various intervals during a day.

Schools and public buildings fall neatly into these

categories. For example, a school hall can be empty one minute and at full capacity the next. The ability to accurately meet these demands at short notice prevents long heat up periods and substantially reduces overshoots in heating requirements. Such controllability brings about major energy savings, with the added benefit of reducing CO2 and NOx levels. Further innovation in fan convector technology has enabled additional energy savings. Fan convectors that interface with condensing boilers, where return water temperatures below dew point (under 55˚C), enable the condensing boiler to substantially increase its combustion efficiency and reduce emissions as it enters condensing mode.

The ability to infinitely modulate fan speed by the use of EC motors and connectivity via BMS link up has increased comfort levels in buildings and brought about further energy savings. Fan convectors also offer options to

introduce fresh air into the building via a plenum fitted with electronic driven dampers and linked to CO2 sensors sited within the building to provide automatic on demand ventilation to

the room the emitter is serving, as required by building regulation BB101. Space within public buildings is usually at a

premium, therefore the selection of an appropriate heat emitter that can accommodate the strict requirements of the building and its usage is essential. On a very practical level, the designer may need to select an emitter that is compact in physical size in relation to its output capacity. In these cases fan convectors can provide the answer.

Flexibility in the siting of the emitter is a serious

consideration where space is restricted. Having the option of floor standing, wall mounted, high wall, ceiling mounted, ceiling grid and trench emitters opens up many solutions to the designer.

Fan convectors can meet these requirements and

more. Chassis type units, for example, can be installed into the fabric of the building, including ceiling voids, with terminal grilles ducted to the fan convector. The only evidence of a heat emitter is thus the terminal grille itself. Safety is paramount with fan convector

applications. The incorporation of pencil proof grilles, lockable front panels, tamper proof controls, together with low surface temperatures and on demand ventilation options, add to the case for specifying these types of heat emitters. Modern fan convectors are quiet in operation and only require occasional maintenance. Easy access through a lockable front panel to the removable filter take seconds and full service can usually be carried out in minutes. To summarise, fan convectors provide a cost effective solution for end users, designers and installers. A compact in size product, easy to install with many siting options and fast response with minimum overshoot times, they provide energy savings and reductions in emissions, while delivering maximum controllability, high comfort levels and low maintenance. Also for those short lead-time projects, there’s a

range of Dunham-Bush Super Comfort Fan Convectors that are available from stock for fast delivery.

Comfort fan convectors are designed and engineered with safety, effi ciency and ease of maintenance the key criteria. With over 30 fl oor, wall and ceiling models in the range and outputs from 2.6 to 12.7kW there’s one to suit every requirement.
