New CIBSE Fellowships recognise Building Safety Act
T
wo of the key individuals behind the Building Safety Act, Dame Judith Hackitt and
Dr Hywel Davies, were awarded Honorary Fellowships to CIBSE in recognition of their lifetime contribution to the construction and building industries. The Honorary Fellowships are the highest accolades that can be presented to non-CIBSE members and are only awarded to individuals whose contribution is seen as exceptional.
Amongst other achievements, Dr Hywel Davies’ technical knowledge proved invaluable following the emergence of COVID-19. During the
early stages of the pandemic, he advised on various aspects of the pandemic response and co- ordinated the advice and guidance on ‘emerging from lockdown’. Guidance notes that have now been downloaded over 60,000 times and are recognised across the world.
Dame Judith Hackitt became widely known in the construction sector when she was appointed to lead the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, commissioned by the Government in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The signifi cance and impact of Dame Judith Hackitt’s work is
undeniable. She is exemplar in her approach to best practice and is pivotal in driving the urgent cultural change needed within the construction sector.
The Fellowships were awarded to
both recipients by CIBSE President Adrian Catchpole at an event attended by CIBSE members and patrons in London on 27 July.
FETA’s Wendy Belfi eld appointed as member of Industry Competence Committee
W
endy Belfi eld has been appointed on to the Industry Competence
Committee (ICC), which has been set up by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to monitor and help to improve industry competence. Belfi eld is a member of the recently established Training and Skills Group, set up by the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA), a T Levels ambassador, and apprenticeship standard Chair. ICC members are appointed in
order to help the Committee act as an industry leader in promoting
and facilitating an improvement of competence across the built environment, by providing direction and infl uence. The ICC will also publish guidance and advise industry and the Building Safety Regulator on industry competence. As commercial director of
InTandem Systems, Belfi eld has developed the company into a thriving BEMS specialist in the building services sector. She has also spearheaded the introduction of the BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship for which she received the Building Controls
Industry Association (BCIA) Outstanding Contribution of the Year Award in 2020.
As part of her voluntary work in the sector, Belfi eld has been promoting the key role of T Levels in starting the professional route to competence at 16. T Levels are occupation-based qualifi cations for 16–19-year-olds and include 45 days on industrial placement. Each T Level is equivalent in size to three A Levels and helps young people develop the knowledge, attitude and practical skills to thrive in the workplace. The FETA Training and Skills Group has
been examining the way in which T Levels can help member companies work with colleges to recruit more young people into the industry in response to concern that attracting new talent into building services engineering remains a big challenge. Equally, Belfi eld feels passionate about ensuring that experienced workers are able to verify their professional competence and is working with other trades within FETA to ensure experienced worker assessments (EWAs) are made available.
