alone can be prohibitive. In our case, being based in south Buckinghamshire, a return train ticket to the nearest college costs £41.00 a day. This catastrophically means that apprentices barely break even on the days they attend college. This fi nancial imbalance, coupled with the perception that our industry is less glamorous than other sectors such as tech or digital marketing, is discouraging a huge number of potential workers. Together, we have the power to remedy this situation. Off ering a reasonable wage, contributing to travel expenses, and fostering a supportive learning environment are just the fi rst steps. Every company can do these things. Investing in apprentices goes beyond merely off ering them training on site; it includes fi nancial incentives, moral support, and an environment that values their growth and contribution. Apprentices are a cost-eff ective route to bringing in new talent and there are many government bursaries and grants available to reduce the costs even further. If you are looking to build a trainee program there are a number of organisations that you can speak to, including local colleges, business enterprise groups, business district improvement schemes, local

ACR industry is paramount to the sustained growth of our economy and the overall quality of life for many people. We don’t need to teach grandma to suck eggs, but the importance of good quality air management and temperature control in home and work environments has never been greater. Sustaining a stronger, more skilled AC workforce positively transcends into a more resilient construction sector overall – and builds one that is capable of handling the rigorous demands of our increasingly urbanized and technologically advanced society. Ultimately, infusing the ACR industry as a whole

with fresh talent means creating a future that is positive for the sector. But for this to become a reality, we must prioritise the development of apprenticeship opportunities and, in turn, the future of the ACR industry itself. We cannot aff ord to stand by and watch a skill shortage hamper our potential. The time to act is now.
