Get on board with sustainability
P
acair’s Sustainability Conference, which took place at the end of June in St Albans, brought together 60 delegates, mainly consultants, who shared insights and ideas on incorporating sustainability into their respective organisations.
Nick Ryman (above), representing Pacair, opened the conference with a warm welcome and an introduction to the theme and objectives of the event. His address highlighted Pacair’s commitment to sustainability and its desire to work with the wider industry to make a positive impact on the environment.
Ryman revealed that Pacair had signed a legal document committing the company to a three-step net zero carbon policy. The three key elements of that commitment are essentially: Q For the company to achieve net zero in line with science-based targets set by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. That is, to achieve net zero no later than 2050 and target a 50% reduction of emissions by 2030.
Q To set realistic long and short term targets to achieve these net zero commitments.
Q To report the emissions of Pacair’s business on at least an annual basis.
“Starting was quite easy, identifying goals and putting them into place,” said Ryman. “The challenging part is ensuring the business follows them: making the changes is challenging, then following them through. But we’re really optimistic about the future – we have a lot of solutions that help support the change – and support our clients to come up with solutions to meet sustainability challenges.”
The morning sessions comprised a series of informative seminars covering various topics related to sustainability:

Ms Allen explained the four pillars that Pacair subscribe to: Q Supporting customers and end-users to increase their energy efficiency, use clean energy supplies and reduce their carbon footprints
Q Enable the sustainability ambitions of suppliers and partners
Q Manage operational environmental and social impacts for the benefit of employees and communities impacted
Q Sustain and evolve governance structure and systems for long term sustainability.
Steve Rees (top right) focused on the product solutions offered by Pacair that align with sustainability goals. He highlighted the significance
Rondi Allen (below), from Sustainable X, presented on Pacair's current operational carbon emissions and its reduction commitments. This session shed light on Pacair's efforts to minimise its carbon footprint and provided insights for other organisations to implement similar strategies. She outlined the process of how a business can become sustainable, highlighting the concept that sustainability goals should be an integral part of business goals rather than an isolated effort. Moving on to talk about Pacair’s sustainability journey in particular, Ms Allen acknowledged that the business was already on board with importance of sustainability and had already taken the initiative and made some significant steps before embarking on the full process.
With Sustainable X’s help, Pacair was able to set out its ambitions, focus on and review specific areas and determine priorities and actions. Finally, putting measures into place, Pacair is now able to monitor, prove and continuously improve its sustainability efforts.
Pacair recently held a Sustainability Conference, with the theme ‘Get on board with sustainability’. The conference aimed to address the pressing issue of climate change and promote sustainable practices in the ACR industry.
of using eco-friendly products to contribute to a more sustainable future. Products that Mr Rees highlighted included Mitsubishi Electric’s CAHV-R second generation R-454C ASHPs, QAHV DHW Generation 40kW ASHPs, and MEHP- Reversible
ASHPs, as well as Trane’s Air to Water Scroll Heat Pumps, Air to water Heat Pumps R454B CXAF and Water to Water Heat Pumps.
With growing concerns over environmental, social, and governance issues, Chris Newman (right) provided expert advice on how the audience can prevent stranded assets. His presentation emphasised the importance of aligning financial decisions with sustainability objectives.
As the nation’s journey towards Net Zero progresses, buildings with energy ratings that are too low could become a liability. As of 01 April 2020, EPC ratings of worse than an E cannot, for example, be let, meaning they become a liability or ‘stranded asset’. In 2028, this will be the case for buildings with an EPC of worse than a C.
Therefore, Mr Newman went on to explain the importance of ensuring compliance to sustainability targets in terms of retrofitting as well as new builds. Ellen Huelin
(right) , sustainability director for Whitecode Consulting, discussed the sustainability regulations affecting the ACR industry across the UK. Understanding these regulations is essential for consultants
to ensure compliance and contribute effectively to sustainability initiatives. She focused legislation such as the London Plan 2021, Part L, Part O and
