Green Point UK, Bitzer UK’s compressor remanufacturing and services arm, has introduced a specialist support service for refrigeration contractors responsible for maintaining cooling systems based on screw compressors.
This service includes remote technical advice, on-site support if required, troubleshooting, and diagnostic services. In collaboration with Bitzer UK, it is also developing an in-person training course on screw compressor technology, to be introduced at the companies’ headquarters in Milton Keynes next year. It is hoped the service will lead to improved maintenance
practices, reduced downtime, lower servicing costs, and improved effi ciency.
Servicing screw compressors in the fi eld presents several challenges due to their complex design and operational requirements. These include: ■ Precision tolerances: Screw compressors are engineered with very fi ne tolerances, meaning even minor wear or misalignment can lead to signifi cant performance issues. Field engineers must be extremely precise and careful, sometimes requiring special tools.
■ Sealing and lubrication issues: Maintaining proper sealing and lubrication within a screw compressor is critical. Incorrect lubrica- tion or seal failure can lead to severe damage, requiring in-depth knowledge of the correct types and amounts of lubricants.
■ Advanced diagnostic requirements: Identifying issues often requires advanced diagnostic equipment and techniques, such as interpreting vibration analysis, oil analysis, or thermography results.
■ High costs and downtime: Screw compressors are typically used in large, high-capacity cooling systems, making any downtime costly.
■ Temperature and environmental sensitivity: Screw compressors are sensitive to operating conditions, including temperature and environmental factors, aff ecting performance and longevity.
■ Heavy and bulky equipment: Screw compressors are often large and heavy, requiring special lifting equipment or techniques for handling during servicing.
■ System integration issues: Screw compressors are part of larger, integrated cooling systems. Problems in the compressor can aff ect other parts of the system, so engineers need to understand the overall system to ensure repairs do not cause issues elsewhere.

Copeland will showcase its latest technologies that support the global energy transition across heating, cooling, refrigeration and industrial applications at the 2024 Chillventa international exhibition.

Copeland’s commercial refrigeration portfolio on display at Chillventa will meet the needs of diff erent store formats and include solutions for centralized and decentralized architectures as well as integral display case architectures. Some of the Copeland products that will be on display at Chillventa in support of these eff orts include: Heating – Sound plays a key role, with 75% of Europeans living in urban areas. Copeland is further enhancing its low-sound compressor for residential heat pumps to meet that need, while increasing effi ciency and enabling the use of natural and low- GWP refrigerants. The company will showcase its fi rst variable speed R-290 compressor for commercial heat pumps which was launched earlier this year. Additionally, Copeland will highlight the brand new VQ95 industrial heat pump from Vilter, a single-stage heat pump designed to decarbonize heating in industrial process heating applications. Cooling – Copeland’s oil-free centrifugal compressor with Aero- lift™ bearing technology will showcase effi ciency in air-cooled chillers and heat recovery applications with low-GWP refrigerants; it’s proven to withstand sudden power interruptions. Refrigeration – The company has a variety of solutions for food , A2Ls and R-290,
retail and food service that enable the use of CO2
