REFRIGERATION

Keeping on top of energy W

Does energy effi ciency and the cost of running a refrigeration system play on your mind? Here, Carel puts forward its best solutions.

ith energy costs rising in the UK, there are products that can help to improve energy effi ciency through the control and regulation of HVACR systems.

Products such as a range of components that can monitor temperature and pressure in a system, helping to regulate the refrigerant fl ow. These can be ideal for many cooling systems. The components have been demonstrating their benefi ts for many years with current refrigerants and are also available for most of the low GWP refrigerants that are now being proposed for future use. Let’s take a look at some of the features and benefi ts of the components.

Programmable controllers The range consists of iJW Refrigeration Controllers, IR33

Universale controllers, pCO Sistema and Sensors. iJW refrigeration controller with built-in ‘wizard’ – iJW

is a new range of controllers for refrigeration, aimed at refrigeration engineers operating in the distribution channel. Suitable for both new installations and retrofi ts, iJW has been designed to simplify the replacement and confi guration of the controller on display cabinets, bottle coolers, plug-ins, chest freezers and in many other applications. Designed for both fi eld replacements and new installations, it is simple to use with native Bluetooth and NFC connectivity. Installers can use their smartphone with Applica for confi guration, testing and maintenance of the controller, while the end users can optimise everyday tasks (such as recording HACCP data) with Controlla.

ir33 universal temperature controllers – these instruments

are used to control temperature, in air-conditioning, refrigeration and heating units. ir33 controllers are versatile and can act as a thermostat, allowing for lower energy consumption and a reduction in polluting emissions. pCO Sistema – a solution for managing HVACR applications and systems. It consists of programmable controllers, user interfaces, electronic expansion valves, inverters with DC technology and communication interfaces, remote management systems to off er OEMs working in HVACR a

control system that is powerful yet fl exible and can be easily interfaced to the most widely used building management systems. A complete solution made-to-measure for the new generation of high effi ciency units: chillers, air-conditioners, heat pumps, shelter units, rooftop units, compressor racks and air handling units. pCO sistema guarantees reliability and can be modifi ed to allow it to diff erentiate itself to suit both refrigeration and air conditioning units. Sensors – the range includes temperature and humidity sensors for wall mounting, duct mounting and industrial environments. Due to the development of technical solutions in sensors they have excellent accuracy making them reliable to measure temperature at a low cost.

Electronic expansion valve technology Electronic expansion valves in the Carel range have been

designed to meet any cooling capacity requirements up to 2000kW in air conditioning and refrigeration applications. Electronic expansion valves provide superior control of the fl ow of refrigerant into an evaporator compared to thermostatic expansion valves. They do this by responding to signals sent by an electronic controller which in turn controls a small motor which is then used in order to open and close the valve port. One of their main advantages is the energy saving available due to the ability to operate at low condensing pressures and allow precise superheat control. This in turn creates improved effi ciency of the refrigeration cycle. Electronic expansion valves allow reliability over time due to their design being of high quality. Precise control of cooling systems is guaranteed, helping the increase of energy saving. The primary function of Expansion Valve Drivers (EVD) is to ensure stable superheat at the required level. These drivers guarantee installation fl exibility as well as managing many diff erent refrigerants in any application. EVD’s are available as ‘single’ or ‘twin’ drivers, the latter able to control two valves independently, which is most commonly used in refrigerants. A powerful removable graphic display can be used to confi gure the driver, which provides clear and immediate information on the operating status of the system.

Partnerships It’s good to look for a company that has a good reputation and

can off er advice and support. Climalife for example, works in partnership with Carel in the UK selling over 100 diff erent Carel components, many available for next day delivery. The Carel product range continues to be well received by Climalife customers, in particular enjoying how well they control superheat, which of course helps towards the effi ciency of the system and reduced energy consumption.
