REFRIGERATION
Five ways that engineers can equip themselves for success
ETI has revealed fi ve pieces of advice for engineers who deal with supermarket refrigeration and how they can best equip themselves for success.
S
upermarket refrigeration comes in all shapes and sizes. One thing that unifi es it is the undeniable vitality to the operations
of the stores themselves. Refrigeration units take up signifi cant fl oorspace within customer facing areas and behind the scenes in storerooms and delivery points. The importance they hold cannot be understated. Any kind of breakdown or interruption can have serious ramifi cations to the reputation of a store, its customers, the produce, and overall fi nances. The engineers that install, service, maintain and repair refrigeration units need to be equipped with the best tools to make sure everything runs to temperature, and with minimal fl uctuation.
Food safety The role of supermarket refrigeration is to keep
food at a safe and sustained temperature to ensure its longevity in storage. Food safety must be the number one priority when it comes to refrigeration. Be it from the instillation process, the maintenance, or the review cycle – food safety is paramount. It is a legal requirement for businesses in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland to store cold foods at 8˚C or below. The UK Food Standards Agency recommends that fridges are set to 5˚C for the safest temperature possible. This is all to be a preventative measure to stop e-coli, listeria, and other harmful bacteria from building, and to help with the longest and safest preservation of the food. It’s important

that refrigerators are regularly serviced and checked to ensure they are maintaining the correct temperatures. If installing a new refrigeration unit consider a reader that has the temperature capturer internally, but the LCD display externally. That way a fast and accurate reading can be accessed, and without adjusting the internal temperature by allowing hot air to intrude. This can also be completed by an untrained member of frontline staff on a day-to- day basis without any specialist equipment.
Convenience and accessibility Temperature is imperative to the smooth
running of operations within a supermarket that being able to take convenient and accurate measurements should be how every engineer should equip themselves. Temperature readers and loggers now come with advanced technologies, but a simple point and shoot infrared thermometer is a great addition to any toolbox or utility belt. It is lightweight and handheld and off ers an accessible and accurate
