instead of two, directly from the refrigerant to the air. This not only makes the entire process more energy efficient but also much faster than traditional units. Due to Ecodesign LOT 62 and requests from
end-users or investors, the heat recovery capability of the AHU has been improved. This means that the temperature of the air before reaching the heating or cooling coil is getting closer to the desired supply air temperature setpoint. This also means that the desired capacity of the heating or cooling coil is getting lower when the heat recovery element is in full function. However, installers often encountered the problem of controlling the capacity of the refrigerant, which can be a complex process – as opposed to the familiar ways of working with water. And that is something Samsung addressed with the new AHU kit. Samsung also delivers the outdoor Expansion Valve kit which regulates the amount of refrigerant to the AHU. The Kit is not restricted to Samsung set-ups and can be easily used on every Air Handling Unit of other brands. It is not possible with a DX system to create a capacity between 0-100% as the bandwidth is always dependent on other conditions (humidity and temperature) before coil in AHU and at the outdoor unit. Generally speaking, however, it is possible to control a DX air conditioning system between 10-100%. With the new AHU kit, the capacity of refrigerant can be easily regulated – much like in a water valve – moving from a very low capacity to 100%. For this control you can use the 0-10V capacity output signal from the AHU or from the Building Management System (BMS). For choosing heating or cooling mode two contacts are required, one contact for heating and one contact for cooling. When both contacts are switched off the AHU kit will stop cooling or heating. The interesting feature of the capacity control is that it follows an almost straight line from minimum to maximum capacity – by what we call a proportional control – as opposed to a traditional Step-control method which is used by other DX manufacturers. This new method is unique to Samsung’s new AHU kit and helps create a steady and comfortable indoor climate for the end-user – one where the discharge temperature is optimal and devoid of fluctuations. This makes the solution perfect for spaces that hosts large groups or crowds, where the temperature of the space
uses to fluctuate a lot – for instance when people enter a theater or cinema all together. Moreover, the ease of function is also a great boost for installers, who require no additional training to install and operate the controls. And finally, it is more cost efficient compared to the traditional Step-control method. The installation is easy, and as the capacity moves gradually along an almost straight line, the logic is easy to explain to third-party control companies and/or AHU manufacturers, it consumes less energy and minimises chances of overshooting or undershooting of temperatures compared to the Step-control method – making it very cost efficient with little energy usage.
