ENERGY SAVING EQUIPMENT

Heat pumps pave the way to energy saving

Haier HVAC Solutions European General Manager Bob Cowlard talks about how the air-to-water heat pump can lead us to a low carbon future.

C

OP 26 has highlighted all our concerns about the challenge of reducing carbon emissions and protecting the planet from harmful greenhouse gases. The decisions made by the world’s leaders in Glasgow will ultimately have an effect on all of us including the cooling and heating industry. The further use of low global warming potential refrigerants and the employment of energy saving heating equipment will grow as we shape the future of the planet and our industry. But the challenges facing us in 2022 are many as we look to find better ways to be a cleaner, greener industry. The cost of energy will continue to rise. Recent price hikes have shown how this can have a huge influence on our decision making as we explore low carbon alternatives. The fall-out from Brexit and the continuing issues presented by refrigerant quota restrictions will not diminish.

Sales wise in our industry we have also seen a real mix across Europe with some markets bouncing back strongly from the pandemic but most still remain behind their 2019 levels. The good news is that the UK has picked up faster than other parts of Europe. For the bounce back to continue energy saving will have

a leading role to play. The importance of finding greener ways to cool and heat our homes and workplaces will grow as we explore more sustainable solutions.

This is why heat pumps will become key drivers in the commercial and domestic markets. The Government recognises this too and its Heat and Buildings Strategy announced in the autumn pinpoints how heat pumps can make a difference. Among a raft of proposals to transform the

UK into a low carbon society, homeowners will receive a grant of £5000 to replace their gas

boiler with a heat pump-based system. This money is an important first step and I have no doubt that it will also leave its mark on the cooling industry too. The £5000 grant is a key incentive to persuade homeowners to opt for the benefits of heat pumps. As well as low carbon heating, for many it will also be the first time that they have enjoyed the advantages of having a greener solution at a more affordable price installed in the home.

This development of low carbon products is blurring the

lines between the trades employed in heating and cooling work. Refrigeration engineers and plumbers will both be needed if we are to meet the climate targets set by the Government. There are concerns that the £450 million set aside by the Government for this transformation will be a mere drop
