Delivering effective ventilation through intelligent installation
The role of ventilation in providing a safe and healthy atmosphere for building occupants is now well established, which places greater onus on contractors to play their part in maximising the effectiveness of a system. David Millward, group product manager at Elta Group, outlines some key practical installation tips.
T
he last two years have highlighted the safety critical role of good indoor air quality (IAQ), and there is a
clearer understanding of the importance of a rigorous ventilation strategy. Often, particularly in commercial buildings, emphasis has been placed on delivering ‘fresh air’, with this term seemingly synonymous with good IAQ.

surrounding the precise meaning of ‘fresh’ in this context. As things stand, there is a general misunderstanding that ‘fresh air’ is simply that which is brought in from outside. This does not go far enough, and in urban areas the air that is brought into the building can often contain high levels of pollutants. Fortunately, there have been changes to the
Building Regulations that seek to provide a more concrete definition of good IAQ. Part of this is to promote the importance of monitoring internal air, which is itself a key element of achieving a healthy atmosphere. Contractors should ensure they keep up-to- date with evolving legislation as this is likely to impact the systems that they install in the months and years ahead.
