TRAINING

Promoting and supporting a learning culture

J&E Hall is fostering a learning for all culture supporting employees at all stages of their careers. The company has a proud reputation for producing top-quality apprentices – several of whom have gone on to become leading figures in the refrigeration and HVAC sectors.

O

pportunity knocks for all J&E Hall employees, regardless of their age or the size of step they wish

to take. Martin Jefkins, J&E Hall director of human resources, believes training is a vital investment: "It would be easy to cut costs by reducing our training budget but even during the pandemic we are really proud to say we spent more on training than in any previous year. We continue to invest because we believe it's important for our people and they tell us it's important for them." J&E Hall has long trained its own engineers of the future via its renowned apprenticeship schemes but the company also wants to bring as many others on board as possible for the learning journey. "We believe if you are working somewhere that pays an interest in you and is willing to develop you and work with you, then you will enjoy working there a lot more and feel as if you are moving forward in your career,” said Mr Jefkins.

"We want to support the future of the industry but also make J&E Hall a place where people truly enjoy their work, feel that they belong and perform brilliantly in their roles." A skills shortage means that successful

recruitment and retention is all the more important and those companies that perform well in this respect will have an edge. Mr Jefkins explained: "At J&E Hall we’ve had

apprentice schemes throughout our long history. I have a book that shows apprentices we employed back in the 1920s. Our scheme as it is today has been running for more than 20 years and is specifically designed for engineering apprenticeships. We bring school-leavers in and put them through a three or four-year scheme to get them to be fully-qualified refrigeration engineers. "They attend three years of study at college, on a block or day-release scenario, supported with on-the-job learning. They will be paired with a senior engineer in whichever

location they are in and supported by a dedicated Apprentice Mentor. It amounts to nine or ten weeks in the classroom during the year. We use several colleges, Grimsby Institute being one of the main ones and other locations include Eastleigh and Bath.” Currently J&E Hall has 14 apprentices under the age of 23 at various stages of their education. "Normally we take them on at 18 – sometimes slightly older,” he added. “At the moment we have seven first-year

apprentices. We take them on in September each year to coincide with when the courses start at college. The apprenticeships run for three years generally but there is also a fourth year when in effect they are junior engineers who get specific on-the-job training. They are upskilled in some of the finer details that aren't taught at college.” Apprentices study for an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems.
