CHILLED BEAMS & FAN COILS
Fan coil units are designed to be inherently quiet. Influencing factors regarding the noise levels which should be taken into consideration are, the height of the ceiling, type of ceiling construction, general room acoustics, and how the fan coil is positioned.
All these influencing factors can affect
the direct and reverberant noise levels, and therefore the resultant noise level in the space being served, thus due consideration must be given to each when referencing and applying the acoustic data provided for a fan coil. Meeting all the requirements for cooling,
energy efficiency and noise levels, fan coil units are a popular choice for specifiers. However, to select the correct fan coils for a building there are a number of considerations including: heat load calculations; design conditions; acoustic design requirements; and installation considerations.
At Diffusion we use bespoke fan coil unit selection software which streamlines the individual unit selection process. This software allows the engineer to factor in a wide range of parameters ensuring the best possible selections can be achieved for the client. From the individual unit selection a project specific quotation can be produced, incorporating full technical schedules detailing; volumetric,
acoustic, thermal and electrical performance data.
Not only does this allow Diffusion to offer a
wide range of standard fan coils we can also offer tailored options ensuring we provide customers with exactly what they need. Each building is different, with different requirements; it is not one size fits all. Therefore, at Diffusion our design engineers work with customers to ensure we deliver the right solution. This includes the option of project specific witness testing so customers can ensure their fan coils will operate as designed.
Witness testing
Witness testing is often used to prove that a specific fan coil system does just what it is designed to do, offering reassurance in the performance of the product being supplied. For example, it is possible to obtain project validation from fan coil companies to test whether a system with highly convoluted duct will work. Any snags in the system will show up during this so the construction team can have peace of mind their system will operate as intended. Diffusion has full test facilities dedicated to the testing of fan coils units for thermal, volumetric and acoustic performance measurements. All
instrumentation and measurement equipment used in our test facility have current calibration certificates. Additionally, computer control of our thermal test room ensures we can accurately maintain the thermal loads required for a given project.
So, although the built environment has
undergone some significant changes during the last decade, fan coils remain a preferred solution for contractors, consultants and architects. Offering effective comfort cooling with low running and capital costs, offering great flexibility and thermal control while providing quiet energy efficient running, fan coil units continue to tick all the right boxes. iffusion has provided heating and cooling at One Bishopsgate Plaza at 150 Bishopsgate, London. The company has supplied 980 of varying types and designs of fan coil units to the new 41-storey mixed- use development which combines luxury residential accommodation, a 5-Star hotel and a public plaza with retail and restaurants. Diffusion’s Highline fan coil units were
installed by contractors GBE in the Hotel and retail areas of the build. The landmark 160 Sky Residences, installed by TClarke, are a collection of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments from level 21 upwards with views of the River Thames, the Tower of London, The Gherkin and St Paul’s Cathedral. On floors 6-19 is the luxury Pan Pacific Hotel with wellness, meeting/events spaces and a 380-seat double- height ballroom/conference facility in the basement. The development will also feature a public space with shops, cafes and commercial space.
Energy efficiency is crucial for any new
build and One Bishopsgate is no exception. Diffusion’s Highline 270 waterside control fan coil units are fitted with high efficiency EC/ DC motors and boasts a specific fan power as low as 0.16W/l/s. The Highline 270 provides heating and cooling to both residential and commercial properties and is the most efficient fan coil on the market, offering the best possible energy savings. These versatile 270mm deep fan coil units can be mounted in ceiling and underfloor applications. Diffusion’s Highline 270 is ErP Directive 2015 Compliant and has a lifetime ECO wire mesh filter, fitted as standard that can be vacuum cleaned in situ or removed for cleaning elsewhere if required.
