TRAINING
In the fourth year, additional qualifications can be obtained especially around electrical systems and specific gases not covered on the course.
J&E Hall managing director Andrew Bowden and service director Peter McAllister began careers at the company as apprentices – highlighting the potential for progress. "In effect Peter runs the division where the majority of our apprentices now join. He was in the scheme and now he supports it,” said Mr Jefkins. “It shows that the route to the top is open if you start as an apprentice. It is also open to go into more specialist roles at J&E Hall. We recognise that not everybody wants to be the next managing director. For example, they may want to be a commissioning engineer and if so we can support their career in that field as well." The introduction of interactive core skills’ monthly sessions for all employees has proved a popular recent innovation. Mr Jefkins explained: "We very much believe in training people throughout their careers, not only in areas that can help them technically in their roles, but in basic skills that we all use in whatever job that we might be in. They are as relevant for one of my team in HR as they would be for an engineer on the road, somebody in IT or sales, or whatever the role might be.
"Each month we run an online course that anybody in the company can join – one hour out of their time each month to cover such skills as ‘plan, do and review’ for example. When you have a task it shows the key skills in how to plan that task, carry it out and then review it to make sure you learn from it. There are other ones such as how to hold an effective meeting which helps you get the outcome you desire. People come with the right information and leave very clear about which way they are moving forwards. "These are interactive workshops. There's no qualification or certificate. It's more of a general upskill session. We do a different topic every month which can be on things that lots of people use in their jobs and their general lives as well. "We have been running the sessions for about a year now. On the last one we featured ‘rapid, action teams’. This was all about when something goes wrong and how you can get the right team of people together to solve it. We were very pleased that 70 people joined the session – a quarter of our workforce."

Management training is another area that J&E Hall believes wholeheartedly in investing in. "We know that for our teams to perform at their best they need good managers to lead them and encourage people to do things in the right way at the right time,” said Mr Jefkins. “So every manager responsible for a team in the company in the last year has been on a two- day course to help them develop or improve their leadership and motivation skills so they can make their teams more effective. “They also need to know how to develop people in their team. How the manager can support that consistent development of the team so everyone feels they are learning all of the time, doing different things if that is what
they want to do and moving forward if that's what they want. We believe it's important because it gives people opportunities. We have lots of people in the business who have moved roles or been promoted and we believe that consistent development is really important. "The overall message we are keen to
promote is that we believe in supporting development throughout all stages of a career. As well as apprenticeships, core skills and management training there are lots of bespoke, individual opportunities that we support people with. For example, it could be a management degree or auditor training."
