CHILLED BEAMS AND FAN COILS
and are often located in hotel rooms as well as airports and large areas in general. They are also used in healthcare
environment, where they are required to meet a wider variety of functionality than other buildings. For example, in addition to temperature set point and humidity adjustments to meet environmental comfort for staff and other building occupants whilst reducing energy consumption, the design specifications must also consider immuno- compromised or infectious patients. This presents a dynamic landscape for building services engineers to work with. The attraction of an active chilled beam
is that it offers a compact HVAC system and combines temperature control, heating, cooling, and air distribution in one design. Installations are typically in false ceilings and comprises air discharge nozzles, water, and ductwork connections (exclusively for active beams) and water valves. Fresh air blown into the room induces the ambient air to move upwards. This air mass is then drawn into the chilled beam through the coil to be chilled or heated, then mixes with incoming fresh air and passes through the side openings before finally entering the room. This effect is widely known as ‘induction’ which is why active beams are
sometimes referred to as induction chilled
beams. The room temperature is controlled with a thermostat that controls the water valve (usually with ON OFF actuator). The nozzles in the chilled beam are carefully designed, shaped and spaced to ensure the correct distribution of air. As an active beam uses a fresh air intake connection, it is essential that the systems are correctly specified, ensuring the beam will be properly connected to the fresh air distribution system (air handling unit). The advantages of chilled beams are well
