Compact climate control: sustainability and performance with easier installation

Here, Matteo Dall’Ombra, VRV specialist at Daikin looks at the challenges of integrating climate control into smaller buildings and how compact systems can provide the solution.

ith UK summer temperatures rising as a result of climate change, an increasing number of residential and smaller commercial projects, such

as offices, require effective climate control. There is also a growing expectation that buildings such as boutique hotels and other hospitality venues will have comfort cooling and heating. However, it is not always simple to incorporate these systems into the building, either for new build or retrofit projects.

Space considerations

Exterior space is often limited, especially as many urban developments are using rooftop areas to create much needed outdoor space for building occupants rather than for building service plant. There may also be line of sight issues that will further restrict where the climate control

outdoor units can be placed. There are several options that will offer compact outdoor units, such as single split systems. However, these are not as suitable or cost effective where the indoor units will be installed in several separate rooms, each with their own heating and cooling requirements. For these buildings, compact multi-split ‘mini-VRF’ – also known as mini-VRV – systems can provide the solution. These low profile, single-fan outdoor units can be installed in a wide range of locations due to their height, such as beneath windows, concealed on balconies or behind low walls and roof parapets. For example, the Daikin VRV 5 S-series units have a height of just 869 mm and a width of 1100 mm. This not only helps to solve line of sight of issues by hiding the outdoor units from view, but also provides greater flexibility with regard to installation. In addition, by choosing a system designed to achieve long
