The future of sports wearables


Sales of wearables in the UK have risen 118% since 2014, and their rise in popularity was reflected by record breaking visitor numbers at the Wearable Technology Showlast month. SGB was in attendance to investigate the latest innovative sports wearables for its readers Recently released report ‘Global Connected

Increasingly, however, connectivity is being introduced not only to high-end, expensive devices but to low- cost objects such as clothing, lightbulbs – even bedsheets, as the SGB team found out on its visit to the Wearable Technology Show 2016. The sector is rapidly changing as high-end consumer appliances and digital equipment as well as many lower cost devices gain connectivity through embedded computing and communications.

Consumer Devices 2016 – 2021’ defines a connected consumer devices as: ‘any device in physical and software form that is used by a consumer user for various purposes including entertainment, news, information, and general lifestyle enhancement.’ “This marketplace is expected to explode,” the report predicts, “as the trend towards Internet of Things (IoT) related devices, applications, and solutions is poised to rapidly expand in the consumer sector. Many industries are impacted by this growth including consumer electronics, entertainment services, energy management, security, healthcare, sports and fitness.” The


report calculates that certain industry verticals will realize substantially better growth than others. Thanks to the internet, customers are likely to already know a substantial amount about connected devices. If retailers want to take advantage of this key growth area, they need to ensure that they understand the market for connected consumer devices and can keep up with customer knowledge and demand. the Wearable Technology Show hit the ExCel, London to showcase the very latest in wearables for sport, health, lifestyle and home. With a 26% increase in visitors compared to the
