reduction in average corrugated board weight over the last 10years.

Average board weight at the start of 2015 was 469gsm, a reduction of over 10 per cent compared to 2005 (525gsm). The long-termdownward trend in average board weight is set to continue alongside an increase in production of thematerial, as borne out by the latest figu Confederation of Paper Ind Eficient production – 42 paper output fromUKmills

However, the weight of paper used to make corrugated board decreased by 0.43 per cent during the same period. In other words, less paper was used tomeet a significantly increased consumer demand. As well as optimising packaging, re-use and recyclingmeasures are being taken to combat waste. Over 80 per cent of

Corrugated packaging has been

designed to protect food at both ends of the temperature spectrum, frommoisture resistantmaterial for cold store packing – which can be customised tomeet the packaging requirements of a wide range of fresh and frozenmeat products – to laminates that havemade it possible to produce a corrugated pack which is heat resistant up to 200 degrees Celsius. Takeaway food packaging has been developed to help tackle the waste often associated withmeals on the go. Corrugated’s thermal properties are renowned – just ask pizza lovers – as its insulated flutingmaterial keeps hot food fresher for longer.

substrates are helping in the battle against food waste by increasing the products’ in- store shelf life.

With the advent ofmodern corrugated processes, such as new flutings that offer up to 23 per cent storage space saving, the corrugated packaging industry is offering more eficient logisticsmanagement through better use of pallets, resulting in fewer vehicles on the road.

CPI’s director of packaging affairs, Andy Barnetson, comments: “Corrugated will continue to evolve and adapt to the challenges ahead. There will bemore pressure to reduce carbon footprint and the environmental impact of packaging. “Corrugated is investing in eficient

manufacturing solutions for a sustainable future. Its flexibility and qualities in terms of printing, design, hygiene, logistics and protection give it a significant edge. Its successful shelf-ready packaging and functionality is benefitting brand owners, consumers and the environment alike.” Sustainability is not only a buzzword, it is good business. The UK corrugated industry is playing a pivotal role in supply chain sustainability by ensuring thatmore food reaches the consumer’s table safe y,fely, fresh and as eficiently as possible.
