According to Joe Franses, director of

corporate responsibility and sustainability at Coca-Cola European Partners: “This example shows howwe can turn the crisis of resources into a business opportunity through close collaboration across the value chain.

Businesseswhich can be truly innovativewith the products and services they provide, optimising the resources they use and

encouraging consumers to do the same, have the potential to transfoformour economy.” Xander van der Vlies, sustainability director for Avery Dennison Materials Group Europe, says that CCEP wanted to further improve Smartwater production in line with its fofocus on recycling, sustainability and creating a circular economy: “Avery Dennison was a natural choice of partner fo

fo for this project, given our

ambitious year-on-year sustainability goals, and the various initiatives we promote around the reduction of waste created in the self-adhesive label value chain.

“We have close relationships both with PET UK and with CCEP’s wastemanagement company Viridor, and together we have been able to establish a strategy that saves on waste and emissions while at the same time giving CCEP concrete business benefits and cost reductions.” More than 50million bottles of

Smartwater were produced in 2015. The PET liners used (carrying the se flf--adhesive labels befofore dispensing) generatedmore than 40 tonnes of waste in that year, costing around £8,500 in disposal/handling costs. Under the new recycling scheme, PET UK shreds and extrudes the waste PET liner and then

produces amaterial suitable foformaking new items such as PET staple fibre, strapping or thermofoformable sheets. There will also be significant savings in CO2 emissions – around 180-200 tonnes in 2016.

CCEP started producing Smartwater fofor the UKmarket in its actory inMorpeth, UK in 2014. It filled around 50million bottles of Smartwater during 2015 alone.

During the production of Smartwater a self-adhesive label is applied to the bottles. These labels are carried on a transparent plastic (PET) liner prior to application, which results in waste aftfter the labels are dispensed.

In total around eight tonnes of linerwaste is generated fofor every 10million bottles of Smartwater produced. The disposal process did not support the emphasis each organisation places on recycling, sustainability and the circular economy. As part of its commitment to sustainability, Avery

Dennison works closely with its customers to transition the industry froma traditional ‘take, make, waste’model to a circular economymodel.

The company’s work with CCEP involved collaboration with one of the UK’s leading plastics processors, PET UK, located in Dumfries, Scotland.

PET UK shreds and extrudes PET liners into a granulate which then undergoes a special treatment befofore being used fofor the production of new PET thermofoformable sheets.

bin, they now become a rawmateri Instead of PET liners ending up in a

production of recycled PET resin.

The recycled PET (rPET) resin becomes a fefeedstock fofor the production of items such as PET staple fibre, strapping or thermofoformable sheets, used fofor the production of trays. CCEP quickly got on board with the idea and introduced Avery Dennison to Viridor, CCEP’s recycling partner. The fofour organisations worked together to establish how the initiative would work. PET UK visited CCEP’sMorpeth factory and began the collection of the rewound PET-liner in November 2015.
