Euroquartz announces medical-implantable quartz crystals from Statek F

requency control specialist, Euroquartz has announced availability of new medical- implantable-grade quartz crystals from Statek that are optimised for wireless RF transceiver applications using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) specifications. The CX16, CX18 and CX20 series

are small devices operating in the 16MHz and above frequency range requested by the BLE transceiver ICs. When miniaturisation is paramount Statek’s low profile CX16 AT quartz crystal is the ideal choice, measuring 2.0 x 1.2mm and just 0.43mm high. Offering frequencies from 24 to 50MHz, the CX16’s resonator is manufactured using state-of-the-art photolithographic and chemical milling processes then sealed in a ceramic package for high stability and low ageing.

Even smaller is the CX18 series measuring 1.6 x 1 x 0.38mm and offering frequencies from 30 to 50MHz while the larger CX20 telemetry crystals have footprint of 2.5mm x 1.2mm and height of 0.5mm with frequency range from 16 to 50MHz.

Euroquartz is an independent UK-based manufacturer and supplier of quartz crystals, oscillators, filters and frequency- related products to the electronics manufacturing industry worldwide. The company is AS9100 registered and designs and manufactures a comprehensive range of frequency control components for a wide

range of customers including major OEMs covering a broad spectrum of applications including military and aerospace, communications, general electronics, computing, control systems and petrochemical among many others.

New innovation turns regular consumer headphones into tinnitus early warning system

A

new innovation developed by UK-based engineering and design consultancy Plextek

could soon have a far reaching impact on the early diagnosis and treatment of debilitating hearing conditions such as tinnitus, often called ‘ringing in the ears’, which is a common health condition where a person can hear sounds that come from within their body, including buzzing and humming, and it currently affects over 300 million people worldwide. Plextek’s new prototype has been designed for integration within standard everyday consumer headphones and has been proven to reliably detect the early signs of tinnitus, well before a person would become aware of the symptoms. By syncing with a smartphone app the

technology could also be used to alert the wearer to a potential problem and encourage them to seek out early medical help or take preventative action. According to the World Health Organisation, 50 per cent of all hearing issues would be preventable with some form of primary intervention. However, existing technologies used to detect conditions like tinnitus are currently restricted to use within clinical and hospital environments and therefore are only used during intermittent health checks or when patients are already experiencing advanced symptoms.

The integration of Plextek’s solution into commonly used in-ear consumer headphones removes this clinical barrier and can play a game-

changing preventative role in the treatment of tinnitus, while also particularly benefitting those within high-risk environments such as loud noise environments, the military or music venues. Plextek’s solution works by accurately monitoring subtle changes to ‘Auditory Evoked Potentials’ (AEP) – a signal sent from the brain by an acoustical stimulus that measures an individual’s auditory ability level. Using a standard laptop and USB audio card, the tests proved it was possible to record ABR waveforms using in-ear headphones, with the experiments using every day brands such as Sennheiser and Sony, to successfully demonstrate its mass audience appeal.
