or years, the call for clear proof of origin has been growing in numerous consumer goods sectors. As a result, and particularly in the food industry, barcode readers are increasingly being used for the automated identification, tracking and tracing of products. Cognex, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial vision systems, sensors, software and ID readers, has helped implement an efficient track and trace solution at the food producer’s

example, fruit and vegetables. However, surveys show that over 60 per cent of customers would like to buy food from their own region. This is why there is currently an urgent requirement for clear rules governing the indications of source and why corresponding solutions based on labelling with barcodes are being introduced throughout the food industry. Hengstenberg, too, sees the

automation of its processes as a means of efficiently meeting the ever stricter requirements of its customers with regard to transparency and proof of origin The Cognex DataMan 302 barcode readers are part of the track and trace system that enables the company at its Bad Friedrichshall site to precise origin of the class

ognex is equipping more and more logistics centres with image-based barcode readers. Zalando, one of Europe’s leading online platforms for fashion, has now installed Cognex DataMan 503 barcode readers at its logistics centre in Erfurt, where it has been able to measurably increase the reading rate on the linear sorter. The image-based devices reduce extra work by means of RTM (a real-time monitoring function) and increase the efficiency of article picking.

Zalando has added four stationary image-based Cognex DataMan 503 barcode readers to the linear sorter at the article picking warehouse. These are intended for reading differently oriented barcode labels in rapid succession. The DataMan 503 devices achieve higher reading rates than systems that are only laser-based, especially with difficult codes.

Laser-based systems generally do not have monitoring and analysis options to introduce optimisation measures, for instance, in case of diminishing print quality. On the other hand, with RTM all important parameters are visible

immediately. RTM is used for determining reading rate and enables automatic analysis using the top- notch image processing algorithms of Cognex, thus contributing to a clear step

optimisation of the processes – facilitating troubleshooting and

lighting as well as the liquid lens with adjustable focus enable the optimum setting of working distance, depth of field and field of view in order to achieve the best-possible read rates.

An intelligent auto-tuning function automatically selects the optimum settings for the integrated lighting, autofocus and imager. Thanks to the patented Cognex Hotbars image analysi s technology, the barcode readers can also reliably read damaged, distorted, blurred and low-contrast codes and transfer the information to the controller. This allows the data to be processed immediately and stored in the long term.
