DISPLACEMENT PUMPS ACHIEVE A HAPPY MEDIUM


David Brown, MD at Börger, explains how the ONIXline positive displacement pumps can handle both high temperatures and highly viscous products


F


ollowing an intensive 6-month trial in a demanding environment, a new


high-pressure pump has proved that reliability and efficiency can be achieved in applications with high temperatures and highly viscous products. Titanium Oxide Slurry from Titanium


Dioxide (TiO2) - used as a white pigment to add brightness and colour to paints, coatings, paper and plastics – is notoriously difficult to pump trouble-free. For this tank-to-process application, which specifies: • Flow : 28 m3

• Viscosity : 2000 cP • Discharge Pressure : 10.4 bar • Temperature : 70˚C • Density : 1.5-1.7 kg/dm a circumferential piston pump (rated @ /h) had been installed.


Unfortunately, the customer had


experienced repeated reliability issues where the combination of high temperatures and high viscosity had proved too much. Also, lack of customer support from the pump manufacturer wasn’t helping. So the search was on to find a reliable


replacement pump, resulting in the discovery of a positive displacement pump from Börger. Designed specifically for high-pressure, high temperatures and highly viscous products, it was decided to go ahead with a trial. Börger UK’s Managing Director, David


Brown, said: “This is such a tough application, but the best way to approach it is with a pump benefitting from very high-quality stainless-steel steel rotors and very gentle, almost pulsation-free pumping. We also supplied the casing, liners, seal bushes and flange connections in stainless steel.” According to Brown, seal-less Magnetic


(Mag) drive pumps were considered and ruled-out due to their inability to deal with viscous fluids properly. He also said many manufacturers of Twin Screw Pumps describe their products as ‘durable and low on maintenance’, which is a perfectly legitimate claim – until a liquid comes along that contains some solid particles.

“In the end,” said Brown, “we were able to show, conclusively, that investing in our pump (an ONIXLine BL 210 fitted with Primus Dual Lobe Rotors) was going to be far more cost-effective, as well as eliminating the ongoing hassle of paying out for repairs.” ONIXline, which is available with

TRIPLE OFFSET BUTTERFLY VALVES AVOID CORROSION


Severn Glocon Group is extending its range of triple offset butterfly valves with a solution that avoids galvanic corrosion in saline applications, without compromising firesafe capability. The OCT SW innovation was driven by market feedback from offshore oil and gas operators in relation to seawater service valves used for fire safety. It ensures graphite parts – which can increase the susceptibility of neighbouring metals to corrosion when exposed to seawater – do not contact line media. Seawater service valves play an integral role feeding water in the event of fire on an offshore platform or


vessel. Their ability to either supply or isolate sections of the water line is a critical safety feature. Eliminating galvanic corrosion while maintaining firesafe credentials has been an enduring challenge for the industry. Severn’s new valve design overcomes this limiting factor and recently passed fire testing in accordance with the latest editions of API 6FA, API 607 and ISO 10497. generally constructed with graphite packings, gaskets and laminated metal/graphite seals. In normal operation this noble material provides good service, but increased risk of galvanic corrosion in seawater applications has been an ongoing concern for offshore operators. Our team overcame significant technical challenges to develop a sustainable solution that removes or replaces graphite.” Severn’s oblique cone technology (OCT) is central to this new solution. The ‘infinite circle’ geometry of


the design enabled the R&D team to develop a hybrid seal technology that eradicates the need for graphite. To validate integrity, OCT SW valves are exposed to a stringent fire testing procedure, involving a 30-


minute burn where they are bathed in flames. The whole test is designed to simulate the time required to extinguish a fire, ensuring the valves can perform during and after an incident. www.severnglocon.com

Titanium Oxide Slurry,” continued Brown, “we tackled an application with resin in the manufacture of high-quality granite sinks, by leading producer, Carron Phoenix. Again, this was not a process for any old pump, but our bespoke solution with our ATEX-approved pumps (designed with special pressurized intermediate chambers and numerous intricate features) worked well for the customer.” Börger’s ONIXline has also replaced a


rotary lobe pump (from another manufacturer) that had persistent sealing problems for a company making plant protection products, conveying medium with a viscosity of up to 150,000 mPas. Here, the ONIXline pump removes the ‘melt’ formed in a thin-film evaporator and pumps it to a disperser. “Stainless-steel rotors are a must for


this highly viscous media application,” continued Brown. “There is a low pulsation and a speed of just 120 rpm. The medium can reach temperatures of up to 140°C, which must not be allowed to cool down during the pumping process. To meet this need we included a heater cover for the pump, which ensures that the pump chamber maintains a constantly high temperature of the medium.” Most recently, Börger has received an
